The #69 Mizzou women's tennis team fell 5-2 to the #27 Oregon Ducks in the finals of the Minnesota Court Classic. The loss brings the Tigers record to 1-1 in the early goings of the season.
Oregon was able to earn points early claming the doubles point after taking all three doubles matches. The Ducks were able to pick up two more points with wins at #1 and #2. The Tigers tightened the match with wins at #4 and #5, but Oregon claimed the final match points with a Davina Mendiburu three-set win over Hana Kraftova at #3 and a close match at #6 with Oregon's Ester Bak narrowly defeating Carolyn Kramer. . "We were a little slow getting out of the gates in doubles and that didn't help," said MU head coach Blake Starkey. "In singles, we battled pretty well. Oregon is one of the better teams in the country, so there are no negatives in this. Their top two kids from Russia are as good as anything we'll see all year, and those two were very impressive. We wanted to win today, but we'll have to settle for getting better by playing this kind of competition. Minnesota has great facilities, and this was a solid weekend. We were glad to be a part of this."
The Tigers open the 2005 home season this weekend hosting Drake and Dartmouth. The Tigers will take on Drake University at 4:00 pm Friday, February 4 and Dartmouth Sunday February 6. Admission is free to the public.
