PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Todd Schavrien will close out his career as an All-American, as the Tiger won his first match of the night by a 12-3 major decision over Michael Mangrum of Oregon State.
With the match scoreless, Mangrum opted to start the second period on bottom. Schavrien took advantage, turning Mangrum twice for five points in near falls. The Tiger escaped to start the third, escaped after a takedown and took Mangrum down two times in the final period, clinching his first career All-America recognition.
With the win, Schavrien was paired up against No. 12 Zack Kemmerer of Penn later in the evening. Schavrien landed a first period takedown, and held a 4-2 lead after two periods despite being taken down in the second. Kemmerer chose neutral in the third, and Schavrien took him down again and rode him out, edging the Ivy Leaguer by a 7-2 decision. Schavrien will take on Iowa's Montell Marion, the No. 5 seed, tomorrow morning. The winner will advance to the third place match, with the loser moving on to the fifth place contest.
Junior Dom Bradley dropped his semifinal match to No. 1 Zachary Rey of Lehigh by a 2-1 score. Rey escaped almost immediately in the second period and rode Bradley for over a minute in the third to edge the Tiger for the second time this season. Bradley drops to the consolation semifinals, where he will take on Maryland's Spencer Myers, looking to advance to the third place contest.
With their first-ever All-America honors, Schavrien and Bradley give the Tigers 32 All-Americans in program history. Since head coach Brian Smith has taken over, the Tigers have had 15 different grapplers finish in the top-eight 27 different times. This is the ninth straight season that Mizzou has had multiple wrestlers recognized as All-Americans.
Missouri stands in a tie for 19th with 30.5 points. Tomorrow morning's session begins at 10 a.m. CT.
