COLUMBIA, Mo. - Eight divers from Mizzou's men's and women's diving teams will vie for NCAA Championships berths this week at the three-day NCAA Zone D Diving Championships Monday, March 8-Wednesday, March 10 in Iowa City, Iowa.
The field is comprised of divers from 18 different women's programs and 14 different men's schools.
The meet gets underway on Monday with the women's 1-meter at 11 a.m. and men's 3-meter at 5:45 p.m. Following prelims, 18 divers will advance to finals. Scores are carried over from prelims to finals.
Zones continue on Tuesday with men's 1-meter at 11 a.m. and women's 3-meter at 5:34 p.m. On Wednesday, the meet will conclude with women's platform at 11 a.m. and men's platform at 3 p.m.
All eight Mizzou divers will compete at Zones this week. In the women's competition, senior Lauren Callin and freshmen Kendra Kieser and Madeline McKernan will dive on all three events. Junior Lauren Reedy and freshman Alexa Beckwith will compete on the springboards.
For the men, junior Clark Thomas will dive on 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. Freshman Elliot Cecil will just go on the springboards and freshman Hunter Fritter will dive on 3-meter and platform.
This season, a new system has been put in place in order to qualify for the NCAA Championships. There will be a base of five spots for women and four for men allotted in each of the five zone for every event.
However, each zone has a different number of spots available based on the number of scoring divers from the 2014 meet. For every top 16 diver from the previous year in each event, the corresponding zone is allotted an extra spot for that board.
Once a diver has been invited to the meet, they can choose to compete in additional events only if they finish in the top 12 at their zone meet.
