COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou swimming and diving teams set three more school records and notched two NCAA 'A' qualifying times as the Tigers claimed 11 wins Friday during day two of the Mizzou Invite. Senior Sharli Brady (Burlington, Kentucky) and juniors Mikel Schreuders (Oranjestad, Aruba) and Alex Walton (Wilton, Iowa) all took down Mizzou records on Friday, with Brady and Schreuders breaking their marks twice during the day.
With one day of competition remaining, the Mizzou men lead the men's field with 985 points. Drury sits second with 474.5 points, followed by Wyoming (415.5), Oklahoma Baptist (322), South Dakota State (241) and Cincinnati (46). The women also sit first with 948.5 points, ahead of Nebraska (500.5), Wyoming (316), Drury (285), Illinois (249), UC Davis (194), Oklahoma Baptist (87), South Dakota State (76), Cincinnati (31), Iowa State (29) and Nebraska-Omaha (2).
KEY PERFORMERS
Brady, who first broke her own Mizzou 400 IM record with a 4:04.75 in prelims, clocked a 4:04.37 in evening finals to lower her mark even further. Her finals time was an NCAA 'A' cut, earning the senior an automatic invite to the 2018 NCAA Championships. The record was the second in as many days for Brady, who also took down Mizzou's 200 IM mark on Thursday.
Schreuders also set the Tigers' 200 free record twice on Friday. He opened prelims with a 1:33.50 to best Michael Chadwick's old mark of 1:33.64 set in 2016, then lowered his time to 1:33.24 in the finals session.
Walton joined the record-breaking club with a big personal best 3:44.08 in the 400 IM. Walton, who entered the meet with a best time of 3:48.17, went 3:45.63 in prelims but took over a second and a half off in the evening. He broke the old record of 3:44.16 set by Daniel Graviss in 2015.
The Tiger women closed the night with an NCAA 'A' cut in the 800 free relay, as Brady, seniors Erin Metzger-Seymour (Westminster, Colorado) and Kira Zubar (Chaska, Minnesota) and junior Courtney Evensen (Golden Valley, Minnesota) took the win in 7:03.59, which ranks second all-time in the Mizzou record books.
In the diving well, junior Kyle Goodwin (Aurora, Colorado) nabbed his second win in as many days with a victory on 1-meter. He scored 381.95 points in finals after 398.55 in prelims. The junior also claimed the 3-meter title on Thursday after a career-high 397.90 in finals.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Greg Rhodenbaugh
"We had a lot of good swims this morning and came back tonight and stepped it up in a lot of ways. This is always a tough meet because you have people who are struggling because they're not rested all the way. But we have others who really don't care how they feel and are stepping up and going really fast. That's always encouraging, especially on a team that's maybe not as experienced, but they're certainly swimming like they're experienced.
"The (women's) 800 free relay made their A cut when it didn't look like they were going to but the last two swimmers just stepped up. It was a great ending to a really good day."
