MIZZOU CONTINUES HOMESTAND WITH OHIO
- Mizzou continues its two-dual homestand on Sunday as the Tigers host Ohio at the Hearnes Center. The dual will start at 1 p.m. CT, and will be streamed live on the Mizzou Network through MUTigers.com.
- Mizzou looks to capture the MAC Dual title in 2017 after coming up just short a season ago. Since joining the Mid-American Conference prior the 2012-13 season, Mizzou has won the MAC Dual and Tournament Championship each season with the exception of 2016-17 when Northern Iowa upset Mizzou on the final dual of the conference slate. (Mizzou was not eligble for the dual title in its first year in the conference, 2012-13, but was eligible for the MAC Tournament Title) At the 2017 MAC Championships, Mizzou captured its sixth consecutive conference tournament title by posting a conference record 154.5 points.
- Mizzou enters the dual ranked No. 4 in the USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll, and has now been ranked in the top-10 in 64 consecutive polls dating back to Nov. 12, 2013, when it was ranked No. 11. Beginning the year at No. 5, Mizzou has now been ranked in the preseason top-10 ranking for four straight seasons. Mizzou checked in at No. 6 in the 2014 preseason poll, No. 9 in 2015 poll and No. 5 in the 2016 poll.
- The Tigers' 7-0 start to the season is the ninth 7-0 start under head coach Brian Smith and the 11th overall 7-0 start in program history.
- Mizzou and Ohio last met on Dec. 11, 2016 when the Tigers traveled to Athens, Ohio to face the Bobcats for a road dual. Six Tigers scored bonus points in the dual, as Mizzou rolled to a 35-7 victory.
- Just over a month into the season, Mizzou's middlewights have been dependable spots in the lineup, as redshirt sophomore 141-pounder Jaydin Eierman, redshirt senior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee and redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis are all still currently undefeated. Up a weight class from the previous two seasons, Lewis has dominated his competition to this point of this season as he will enter the dual with a record of 11-0 (7-0 in duals) while leading the team with 34 dual points. The two-time All-American has recorded bonus point wins in nine of 11 matches this season. Lavallee, a returning NCAA Finalist, has been solid once again for Mizzou, as he currently holds a record of 10-0 (6-0 in duals). Lavallee has been tough to score on the season, as no opponent has scored more than four points on the Tiger senior. In his second season as an attached wrestler, Eierman picked up right where he left off, as he has posted a record of 10-0 (5-0 in duals), and has recorded five falls, two major decisions and one technical fall on the season.
MIZZOU OPENS MAC COMPETITION WITH WIN OVER ODU
- Mizzou Wrestling opened its conference schedule with a 36-3 win over Old Dominion on Dec. 2. After dropping the opening the match, Mizzou rolled out nine straight victories, and received bonus point wins in the dual from redshirt junior 149-pounder Grant Leeth, redshirt junior 174-pounder Daniel Lewis and redshirt heavyweight Austin Myers.
- In the 149 pound bout, Leeth record the first official pin of his career when he put Kenan Carter on his back in the third period (Leeth had four falls during his redshirt season at Duke in 2014-15). After beginning the year unranked in the individual rankings, Leeth has skyrocketed to as high as No. 12 by FloWrestling, and is now 9-2 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in dual competition.
- Lewis posted his ninth win by bonus points this season with his first technical fall of the season, as the two-time All-American defeated No. 20-ranked Seldon Wright, 15-0 in 6:05. Lewis was dominant from the first whistle, as he scored a takedown 11 seconds into the match and then recorded two four-point near falls before the end of the first period. Lewis finished off the technical fall with a third period takedown to record his sixth career technical fall.
- In the final match of the dual, Myers put the hammer down on Ali Wahab, winning the match by major decision, 13-2. Myers controlled the bout from the start, scoring a takedown 30 seconds into the match, then growing his lead to 10-0 with two four-point near falls before the end of the period. The deficit was too much for much for Wahab to come back, as Myers recorded his first major decision on the season.
