Tate Schroeder improved to 4-0 in singles play during the spring season
LOGAN, UTAH – Mizzou Tennis (2-1) earned its second victory of the season in convincing fashion, taking down Utah State, 6-1, Wednesday afternoon at the Sports Academy and Racquet Club. The Tigers took five of six singles matches in handing the Aggies (3-1) their first loss of the season.
In doubles play, the No. 2 pairing of senior Bea Machado Santos (Lisbon, Portugal) and junior Clare Raley (Atlanta, Ga.) gave the Aggies their first doubles loss of the season -- Utah State had been a perfect 9-0 in doubles matches -- with a 6-3 win. On court three, the pairing of freshman Tate Schroeder (Centennial, Colo.) and senior Cassidy Spearman (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) continued their strong play earning their fifth straight victory as a pair, taking the No. 3 doubles match 6-4.
With the doubles point in hand, Mizzou headed into singles play feeling confident. Schroeder put her abilities on full display, quickly dispatching Utah State's Sabrina Demerath, 6-0, 6-3. The victory was Schroeder's sixth singles win of her career and gives her an unblemished 4-0 overall record this spring.
Junior Brianna Lashway (Bradenton, Fla.) earned her team-leading ninth singles victory by defeating Monika Van de Vondel in the No. 2 singles position, 6-2, 6-1. Not to be outdone, junior Amina Ismail (Maineville, Ohio) notched her eighth overall singles win in the No. 4 position, coming from behind to take down Lucy Octave 6-4, 6-3. Ismail was trailing 2-4 in the opening set before winning 10 of the next 13 sets to earn the victory.
Freshman Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) got the win in her spring-season debut for the Tigers at the No. 5 spot. She improved her overall singles record to an impressive 8-3 by beating Hannah Jones 6-2, 6-2. Raley's match in the No. 6 slot entered a super set after the first two sets resulted in a tie. Raley fell behind 4-8 in the set before roaring back to take a 12-10 victory, giving her a 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10) win.
Mizzou finishes its swing through Utah with a matchup at BYU on Friday. First serve is set for 12 p.m. CT.
