Wright/Middlebrooks move to 16-3 on the year
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Mizzou Tennis team again had several bright spots as it wrapped up its Alumni Weekend, yet No. 11 Ole Miss registered a 4-1 win Sunday afternoon at the Mizzou Tennis Complex.
Sophomore Mackenzy Middlebrooks (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and freshman Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) are undefeated in their last four doubles matches. They ran their season record to 16-3 (15-2 dual, 3-1 SEC) with a convincing 6-1 win at No. 3. The Rebels (13-5, 4-4) would take the other two matches to win the doubles point.
The Tigers (11-10, 0-7) showed flashes of brilliance in singles play. Freshman Taylor Gruber (Spicewood, Texas) won for the sixth time this season, fighting back from a 6-1 first-set hole to take the final two sets, 7-6 (5) and 6-2. Sophomore Serena Nash (Bradford, England) had a tough match against the No. 17-ranked singles player in the country, Ole Miss' Arianne Hartono. Nash also dropped the first set, 6-1, but fought back with a 6-3 win to also force a third set. Nash forced a tiebreak before Hartono prevailed, 7-6, in the third.
"Another close battle today," said Head Coach Colt Gaston. "I thought we competed well after a tough doubles point, but just didn't execute on the big points today. "We continue to put ourselves in good spots, and we're fighting hard; I'm proud of the girls for that. There is a lot to build on, and we will take the positives and get back to work next week."
