Hayden Buckley captures fourth individual title of the season
COLUMBIA, Mo. — Mizzou Men's Golf earned its second consecutive title at the annual Tiger Invitational and its third event title of the 2017-2018 season on Tuesday. The invitational was an uphill battle for the entire field as teams had to stop midway through their second round yesterday and finish it Tuesday at an 8 a.m. tee time due to inclement weather. The Tigers kept their momentum going for the final round, logging a total 7-under (839) and claiming a new Tiger Invitational 54-hole record. The Tigers held the previous record of 852 in 2013.
The individual champion, senior Hayden Buckley (Beldon, Miss.), shot 12-under (204) and beat the individual tournament record by four strokes. Mizzou Golf alum Ryan Zech held the previous record posting a 208 in 2012. The Mississippi native had back-to-back scores in the 60's after putting up a 69 in Round Two. At the finish of Round Three, Buckley tacked on a final under-par round to seal his place at the top and end five strokes ahead of second place.
Right behind Buckley on the leaderboard, freshman Jamie Stewart (Renfrewshire, Scotland) snagged T-2nd with an incredible showing in his third round. The freshman standout sat T-10th and was just 2-under at the end of his second round. Stewart shot 5-under (67) in Round Three to clinch the second place spot and the second-lowest score of his career at Mizzou.
Fellow freshman Jack Parker (Columbia, Mo.) had a stellar first two rounds recording 5-under at the end of 36 holes. With four birdies but a tough hole on 14, Parker finished his third round 2-over resulting in a finish at T-9th and a total of 3-under (213).
In the fifth slot, senior Trevor Ullestad (Jewell, Iowa) came through with solid scores as he also sat T-9th and ended his run 3-under (213). The Iowa native held on in his final round posting 2-under and sealing a Top-10 finish.
Further down the leaderboard, senior Luigi Botta ended his tournament T-65th with back-to-back 75's in Round Two and Round Three. The Italy native shot 13-over for the event.
The Black & Gold's individuals had solid performances this week. Sophomore Rory Franssen finished his last two rounds nicely, cementing a score of 4-under (212) for the tournament. Franssen claimed the sole spot at 8th place. Junior Matt Echelmeier (Columbia, Mo.) finished right behind Franssen at T-9th after keeping it even for the fist two rounds and coming back for the final 18 holes shooting 3-under (213).
