1,000 free t-shirts will be handed out, Tigers will honor their seniors, and Bradley wrestles Hemida at intermission
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Wrestling, following a 10-day break after clinching its ninth consecutive conference title, will be back in action this Saturday (Feb. 22) as it hosts old Big 12 rival Iowa State for a 1:30 p.m. dual at the Hearnes Center. The contest is the Tigers' final dual of the 2019-20 season as head coach Brian Smith will honor the program's 11 seniors prior to the match, with the ceremony beginning at 12:45 p.m.
A large crowd is expected to be at Hearnes Center Saturday with the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships being contested next door at Mizzou Arena, so fans are encouraged to arrive early to secure parking and attend the senior day festivities. Saturday's dual will air live on ESPN3 for those unable to be in attendance.
Mizzou is offering plenty of exciting promotions for Saturday's dual, including a Tiger Style Family Four Pack of tickets. For just $35, fans get four tickets, four hot dogs and four soft drinks at Saturday's dual. Fans are encouraged to wear gold as Saturday's dual marks the annual Gold Rush at Hearnes as 1,000 gold Tiger Style t-shirts will be handed out.
In addition, to everything else going on around the dual, intermission will feature an exciting exhibition bout between a pair of Olympic hopefuls in Mizzou volunteer assistant coach Dom Bradley and Maryland's Youssif Hemida. The bout will give Tiger Style fans an up-close look at some elite-level wrestling as the two continue to train for a spot on the 2020 Olympic team.
Mizzou comes into Saturday's dual at 11-7 overall and a perfect 8-0 in MAC competition. The Tigers are ranked as high as No. 15 nationally in WIN Magazine's Dual Team Rankings (Feb. 17). Iowa State is ranked as high at No. 15 in FloWrestling.org's top-25 while it checks in at No. 25 in WIN Magazine's Dual Team Rankings. The Cyclones are 9-4 on the season and 6-1 in the Big 12.
Mizzou and Iowa State have wrestled common opponents this season in Arizona State (Mizzou lost, 21-13, and Iowa State lost 21-12), Oklahoma State (Mizzou lost 26-6, Iowa State lost, 23-9) and Northern Iowa (Mizzou lost, 20-13, Iowa State won, 18-16). Mizzou won last year's meeting with the Cyclones, 23-15, in Ames on Feb. 24. In all, the Tigers and Cyclones have met 53 times over the years as former Big Eight and Big 12 rivals. Iowa State has won 44 of the 53 duals, but the Tigers have won the last four meetings. Mizzou's last loss to the Cyclones came during the 2009-10 season, a 28-10 loss to close that regular season. The 44-9 lead in the all-time series is a bit misleading as Mizzou is 7-8 against the Cyclones since Coach Smith took over the program in the 1999-2000 season.
