Schweizer Posts Second-Fastest 5000m Time in American History

Schweizer records second-fastest 5000m time in American history at 14:26.34
PORTLAND, Ore. – Mizzou Track & Field legend Karissa Schweizer (Urbandale, Iowa) and Bowerman Track Club teammate Shelby Houlihan became the first two American females to run sub-14:30 in the 5000m run on Friday evening in Portland. Houlihan's time of 14:23.92 and Schweizer's time of 14:26.3 broke the previous American record of 14:34.45, set by Houlihan in 2018 in Belgium, and rank as the 12th- and 14th-fastest times in world history.
Schweizer improved her personal record in the 5000m by more than 18 seconds, improving on her time of 14:45.18 at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Schweizer also set a new personal record in the 1500m run on June 30 in Portland, clocking a 4:02.81 and besting her previous time of 4:08.51.
In lieu of no meets being held around the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the meet was held at Jesuit High School in Portland, Ore., and hosted the Bowerman Track Club to let athletes race at the end of their training blocks.
