This is the first meeting after the Tigers and Cowboys had a one-year hiatus from their yearly dual
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The 12th-ranked University of Missouri wrestling program will play host to No. 10 Oklahoma State on Sunday at 2 p.m. CT inside Hearnes Center. The dual will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Beau Baehman and Matt Manley on the call.
Fans can purchase tickets to the Gold Rush dual at MUTigers.com/TigerStyleTix or by calling 1-800-CAT-PAWS.
THE HISTORY
The Tigers and Cowboys will face off for the 52nd time with Oklahoma State leading the all-time series 44-7-1. All seven of Missouri's wins come under the direction of head coach Brian Smith. This is the first time since Feb. 24, 2012, that the two programs have met as in-conference opponents.
Since the 2004-05 season, all 20 meetings have been Top-25 duals. This includes six meetings where both programs ranked within the top-5 in the NWCA poll.
In 2019, the last time Mizzou hosted Oklahoma State, the dual set a new Hearnes Center attendance record with 4,721 spectators coming through the doors. In the two programs' last meeting in 2020, the Cowboys defeated the Tigers 26-6 in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
THE MATCHUP
Missouri is projected to wrestle eight ranked wrestlers while Oklahoma State will wrestle nine. Missouri's sunranked weight comes at 133 and 174 pounds while Oklahoma State will have an unranked starter at 197 pounds.
The highest-ranked match of the afternoon is set to take place at 165 pounds as No. 1 Keegan O'Toole will take on No. 10 Travis Whittlake. O'Toole will wrestle coming off a three-dual absence. He ranks between first and third across the major polls and currently sits second behind Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson in FloWrestling's Dan Hodge Award rankings.
For the Tigers, redshirt freshman Noah Surtin will look to get back in the win column following a tight loss to Utah Valley's Taylor LaMont. He will take on No. 8 Trevor Mastrogiovanni. In their only prior meeting, Surtin brought home a 9-6 victory.
At 133 pounds, Trey Crawford will take on No. 2 Daton Fix for the second time in his career. Last year at the Cowboy Challenge, Craword lost by technical fall. Last fall, Fix won silver at the 2021 UWW Senior Men's Freestyle World Championships in Oslo, Norway.
Crawford, O'Toole, Surtin, No. 17 Josh Edmond (149 pounds), Sean Harman (174 pounds), No. 16 Jeremiah Kent (184 pounds) and No. 5 Rocky Elam (197 pounds) will all wrestle against the Cowboys for the first time in a dual setting. For much of the group, the opportunity was lost last season due to scheduling conflicts associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. On Sunday, all but Elam will be tasked with hitting the mat against a top-15 opponent.
At 157 pounds, No. 21 Jarrett Jacques will wrestle in his third dual against Oklahoma State's Wyatt Sheets. The two are 1-1 against each other with Jacques getting the better of Sheets in the 2019 meeting and Sheet's winning in 2020.
Rounding out the Tigers' starters, No. 15 Zach Elam will wrestle No. 32 Luke Surber for the first time head to head. In 2019, the dual came down to heavyweight as Elam, then a true freshman, lost in sudden victory.
UP NEXT
The Tigers will get back on the road to wrestle No. 13 Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 12, in Tempe, Arizona. The dual is set for an 8 p.m. CT start.
