The Tigers will send nine wrestlers to Detroit, March 17-19
COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri wrestling program will travel to Detroit for the NCAA Wrestling Championships at Little Caesars Arena beginning Thursday, March 17-19. Every match of the tournament will stream on ESPN+, with morning sessions televised live on ESPNU and evening sessions being televised live on ESPN.
Qualifiers
The Tigers will have a contingent of nine wrestlers in the tournament, headlined by No. 2 seed Keegan O'Toole. The freshman won the Big 12 Championship at 165 pounds March 6. Last year at the national championships in St. Louis, O'Toole finished as an All-American, placing third in the weight class.
Freshman Rocky Elam will also look to repeat as an All-American. Elam finished fifth at 197 pounds during the 2021 tournament. Elam placed third at the Big 12 Championship along with his brother Zach Elam in the 285-pound weight class. Zach will compete in his third NCAA Championships.
Qualifying for his team-leading fourth NCAA Championships, junior Jarrett Jacques comes in as the No. 25 seed at 157 pounds. He's joined by returning national qualifiers Noah Surtin (125 pounds) and Big 12 Championship runners-up Allan Hart (141 pounds), Peyton Mocco (174 pounds) and Jeremiah Kent (184 pounds).
Making his first NCAA Championships appearance in his hometown will be freshman Josh Edmond. The Detroit native placed fifth at the Big 12 Championships and will enter the tournament as the No. 26 seed after receiving an at-large bid at 149 pounds.
Storylines
- The Tigers will look to finish in the top-10 at the national tournament for the seventh consecutive season (the tournament was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19).
- Per Jason Bryant's 2022 NCAA Fan Guide: Mizzou ranks second in the NCAA over the last 10 seasons with 91 national qualifiers
- Mizzou returns eight of its 10 national qualifiers from 2021. Freshman Josh Edmond is the lone wrestler without NCAA Championships experience
- Freshman Keegan O'Toole is one of two undefeated wrestlers at 165 pounds, coming into the national tournament with an unblemished 20-0 record.
- O'Toole and Rocky Elam would be the 23rd and 24th wrestlers in program history to be multiple-time All-Americans. Junior Brock Mauller is the only active Tiger to do so.
