The sophomore represented Finland on the international stage.
Mizzou gymnast Kaia Tanskanen capped off an impressive international campaign after finishing 15th overall in the all-around final at the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, in Jakarta, Indonesia, representing her home country of Finland on Thursday morning.
Competing among the world's top 24 gymnasts, Tanskanen posted an all-around score of 51.266 to finish inside the top 15 on the global stage. The performance marks her first career appearance in a World Championships final.
Tanskanen was one of just two gymnasts from women's NCAA programs to qualify for the all-around final, joining Florida's Leanne Wong, who earned the silver medal. Tanskanen was the only active NCAA gymnast to compete in the final.
The sophomore turned in consistent routines across all four events, highlighted by a 13.266 on floor exercise and a 13.100 on vault, paired with marks of 12.400 on uneven bars and 12.500 on balance beam.
This year's event marked Tanskanen's third World Championships appearance and her best all-around finish to date. Her previous highs included 13.333 on vault (2023), 12.600 on bars (2023), 11.333 on beam (2023) and 12.800 on floor (2022).
During her freshman season at Mizzou, Tanskanen appeared 12 times, primarily on vault and floor. She scored 9.875 or higher on floor in four of five routines, including a 9.900 in her collegiate debut against Georgia, and recorded 9.800 or higher on vault seven times.
Gymnastics runs deep in the Tanskanen family. Her father, Juha, competed for Finland at the World Championships; her mother, Kim, was a collegiate gymnast at Iowa on a full scholarship; and her uncle, Jani, captured the high bar world title for Finland.
