KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Mizzou Baseball dropped its series finale, 7-1, to No. 22 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Vols (17-7, 3-3 SEC) used strong pitching and timely hitting to take the rubber match from the Tigers (16-8, 1-5 SEC).
Lefty Brady Kehlenbrink went six-plus innings, his third straight outing retiring 18 batters. The Ballwin, Mo., native allowed four runs on five hits while sitting down nine Vols. Pierre Seals provided the offense for Mizzou as his solo shot was the Tigers' lone tally, and his second homer of the series. Kaden Peer had a pair of hits including a double, completing a series where the junior hit .455.
Mizzou went down in order in the top of the first, then Kehlenbrink had runners at the corners with two away when UT sent the runner in motion from first base, prompting a throw to second allowing the runner on third to score the game's first run.
Peer led the second inning off with a double, then the pitchers combined to retire the next eight batters until Kam Durnin drew a two-out walk in the third. Kehlenbrink settled in after the first inning, allowing just a single across the next two frames while he struck out five Vols in the first three innings.
Seals was left stranded in the fourth after a lead-off walk and Tennessee broke through for a big inning in the bottom half. UT opened the inning with a double and a single back-to-back, then a sacrifice fly made it 2-0 before a two-out, two-run homer put the Volunteers ahead by four.
The sides sent just three batters to the plate in the fifth as Mizzou used a 3-6-3 double play to end the bottom half.
Seals got the Tigers on the board in the sixth with a two-out solo bomb which traveled 419 ft. to deep left field. Peer reached on a base hit after the homer, but MU could not piece together a two-out rally.
Six straight batters were retired heading into the seventh inning stretch as Kehlenbrink returned for the bottom of the seventh, but a lead-off double would mark the end of his outing. Right-hander Trey Lawrence inherited the runner and after striking out the first Vol he faced gave up an RBI single to give UT a 5-1 lead.
Missouri pieced together a two-out threat in the eighth as Woita singled and Seals got hit by a pitch. The duo advanced on a wild pitch, but a strikeout left both stranded in scoring position. UT then stretched their lead to six with a two-run shot in the eighth before Mizzou went quietly in the ninth.
