LAWRENCE, Kan. - Mizzou baseball fell to rival Kansas, 10-0, in the StorageMart Border Showdown at Hoglund Ballpark on Wednesday afternoon – the first of two diamond editions of the rivalry this season.
Two-out runs were the story of the game, as Kansas (12-8, 1-2 Big 12) struck for three in the first inning after a two-out walk. From there, a Cade Baldridge single set the table for a three-run shot by Kansas' Dariel Osoria to make it 3-0 Jayhawks after one.
Kansas extended its lead in the third inning with the help of two Mizzou (15-6, 0-3 SEC) errors defensively. The Jayhawks continued the trend with five more two-out runs, the big blow coming from another three-run shot, this one off the bat of Max Soliz Jr.
In the fourth, back-to-back one-out singles by Pierre Seals and Jase Woita presented the first threat of the game for Mizzou offensively, but the scoring opportunity stalled as the Jayhawks turned two to end the inning.
The Jayhawks added a run in the sixth and the seventh to swell the lead to double digits and end the game, 10-0, in run-rule fashion.
NOTEBOOK
- With a single in the fourth, Woita has now reached base safely in 16-consecutive games. He finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Cameron Benson's sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 11 games, and his on-base streak to 16 games to match Woita. He ended the game 1-for-3.
- Shortstop Kam Durnin recorded the lone extra-base hit of the day for the Tigers with his seventh-inning double. He ended the contest 1-for-2, also drawing a walk.
- Seals extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the fourth inning, ending the game 1-for-3.
- In his third career start, freshman RHP Luke Sullivan was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season. He went 2.2 innings and allowed three earned runs (eight total) on eight hits, striking out three and walking one.
- Kansas plated its first eight runs of the game all with two outs (three in the first, five in the fourth).
- The loss marks the first run-rule defeat for the Tigers this season, as they have run-ruled five opponents themselves.
- Despite the loss, Mizzou still leads the all-time series over the Jayhawks, 220-133-2.
The Tigers hit the road for their second Southeastern Conference series of the season this weekend (March 20-22) at No. 22 Tennessee, with game one slated for 5:30 p.m. CT Friday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The entire series can be streamed live on SEC Network+. All games can also be streamed on the Varsity Network by Learfield, with longtime Mizzou play-by-play announcer Tex Little on the call and Matt Michaels providing color.
