HOOVER, Ala. – Mizzou baseball dropped its second-round game of the SEC Tournament, 12-2, to No. 16 Mississippi State in seven innings on Wednesday morning at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
The Bulldogs (40-16) erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the run rule into effect.
Shortstop Kam Durnin concluded his strong tournament with a 2-for-3 day including a solo homer in the first inning.
The Tigers (24-31) struck first on the aforementioned 427 ft. Durnin bomb and held their lead as southpaw starter Brady Kehlenbrink struck out three of the first six batters he faced, while retiring five.
Mizzou could not find the final out of the second, however, as an overturned caught stealing was followed by an error and a three-run shot to catapult MSU ahead, 3-1.
Kehlenbrink settled back in from there, striking out five of six and retiring seven straight batters, keeping Mizzou within a pair entering the fifth.
A leadoff single by Kaden Peer paired with a throwing error to advance Peer put the Tigers in position to cut into the Bulldogs' lead. Situational hits by Jamal George and Chris Patterson helped Peer to score and make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Mizzou was back into trouble in the fifth as two walks started the inning and a one-out single boosted State's lead back to two. Another free pass loaded the bases and Missouri turned to Sam Rosand for the final two outs of the fifth and the freshman delivered with a punchout, then ended it himself with a ranging 1-3 putout to tightrope the bases-loaded jam.
MSU was able to grow its lead to 10 in the bottom of the sixth, aided by a pair of homers off Vytas Valincius' bat.
Mizzou's last effort in the seventh was put out as Mississippi State faced the minimum to advance to the SEC Quarterfinals.
