AUSTIN, Texas – Mizzou baseball dropped game two of its three game Southeastern Conference series to No. 6 Texas, 11-6, on Friday night at Disch-Falk Field.
After two scoreless frames by Mizzou (23-29, 6-23 SEC) starting pitcher Brady Kehlenbrink, the Longhorns (39-12, 18-10 SEC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third with a pair of home runs.
Texas struck for six more runs in the fourth inning to grow its lead to 10-0, the big blow coming on a grand slam from Longhorns' catcher Carson Tinney for his second homer of the game.
Needing at least a run to avoid the run rule, Mizzou got on the board in a big way with a six spot in the top of the seventh inning, loading the bases after the leadoff batter of the inning was retired. Jamal George singled to right-center field, Kaden Peer was hit by a pitch and Chris Patterson laced a single up the middle to load the bases, setting up a bases-loaded walk by Pierre Seals.
That brought Jase Woita to the plate, who delivered a bases-clearing, three-run double to give him an even 50 RBI on the season. Freshman Blaize Ward plated the fifth run of the inning on an RBI ground out before Kam Durnin came in to score on a two-out wild pitch to complete the six-run seventh and make it a 10-6 game.
Texas got a run back in the bottom half of the seventh on a two-out RBI single from Casey Borba to extend its lead back to five runs. The late rally by the Tigers was ultimately not enough as the Longhorns hung on to win, 11-6.
NOTEBOOK
- Kehlenbrink made his 14th start of the season and went three innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and no walks, striking out three Longhorns. He took the loss and moved to 3-9 on the season overall.
- Center fielder Kaden Peer was 2-for-3 with his seventh two-bagger of the campaign and reached base a third time thanks to being plunked. He also scored a run and made a nice diving catch in center field to take away extra bases.
- Shortstop Kam Durnin ripped his team-leading ninth double of the season and finished the night 1-for-4 with his 10th stolen base and a run scored.
- Woita became the fifth Tiger over the last 10 seasons to knock in 50-plus runs with his bases-clearing double in the seventh. He ended the night 1-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
- Right-hander PJ Green threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and a walk while striking out one.
- Luke Fricker pitched the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a run, collecting a pair of strikeouts and giving up two hits.
- Right fielder Pierre Seals went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
- Third baseman Chris Patterson and left fielder Jamal George each collected a hit and scored a run.
The Tigers are back at Disch-Falk Field on Saturday for the series finale and final regular-season game of the season versus the sixth-ranked Longhorns. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT as RHP Keyler Gonzalez will make his third start of the season on the mound. Mizzou will then hit the road for Hoover, Alabama, and the SEC Tournament.
