
Seniors Help Tigers Swim Past SMSU

COLUMBIA, Mo.- Senior Day was a special day for the Missouri swimming and diving teams on Saturday afternoon. Five senior swimmers and divers collected first place finishes to help lead Mizzou to a sweep of the Southwest Missouri State Bears. The women improved their dual meet record to 7-2 with a dominating 171-79 win. The men improved to 6-2 in dual competition with a 141-102 victory.
The women took home first place in every event of the afternoon. Senior Kristin Hoover led the charge with a win in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10 minutes 49.87 seconds. Hoover also placed third in the 500 free to complete a 1-2-3 sweep of the Bears. Junior Tawney Larm finished first in the event with freshman Tara Brooks placing second.
Senior captain Andrea Lemmink, who has battled injuries over the last two seasons, brought home a first place finish in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.08 seconds. Diver Cortney Coats made her final diving attempts in the MU Natatorium count by winning the 3-meter competition and placing second in the 1-meter event behind teammate Erin Wilke.
The other senior woman to claim a victory was Christy Voelker in the 200 backstroke. Voelker's time was 2 minutes, 10.70 seconds. Junior Julia Alexander placed second in the event.
Other Tiger victors included Tara Brooks in the 200 free with senior Bethany Biaett placing second. Junior Amanda Smiley won the 200 individual medley while sophomore Kim Lambert claimed the 200 breaststroke. Freshman Krista Davis won the 200 butterfly with teammates Molly Vetter and Erika Kalocinski finishing second and third.
The Missouri men's team pulled away at the end in what was a pretty competitive meet. The team of Chris Peters, Mike Miller, Ryan Ruddy and Dave Kinsella, all seniors, won the first event of the day, the 400 medley-relay, in a time of 3 minutes 25.68 seconds.
Sophomore Aaron Lo was the only double-winner on the day. He won both the 50 and 100 freestyle events. Sophomore Mike Cervenka took home the 200 freestyle and charged passed SMSU in the 400 free-relay to give the Tigers the victory in the final event. Chris Peters won the 200 backstroke in his final MU Natatorium appearance with a time of 1 minute, 53.21 seconds. Freshman Andy Cole placed second.
The Tiger men also claimed both diving events. Sophomore Ryan Day took home first place on the 1-meter board while junior Brad Duggan won the 3-meter event.
