The University of Missouri women's swimming and diving team kicked off its weekend of competition Friday evening (Jan. 28) at University Natatorium as they hosted the University of Iowa. The Tigers won the dual with a score of 167-131.
It was a close meet at the start with Missouri pulling away after the 100 backstroke. In the end, MU set a school record, claimed 8 first place finishes, had two 1-2-3 sweeps and set five pool records (7 were set on the night). Not a bad way to open a three meet home stand.
Mizzou started the meet off with a spectacular 200 medley relay. The team of senior Rikki Janes, freshman Leslie Hoh, junior Jeanna Willi and freshman Ellen Cross smashed the pool record with a time of 1:45.65. MU was only a half second off the school record as well.
The performance of the evening, however, came from the Black and Gold's sensational freshman in the 100 breast. Leslie Hoh, a 2000 Olympic Trials qualifier, not only crushed the pool record, she established a new school record as well. With her time of 1:04.75, she becomes the first Tiger swimmer to ever break the 1:05 barrier.
Hoh was not done yet, as she won both the 200 breast and 200 IM in new pool record times. Her time of 2:19.86 in the 200 breast was just two tenths of a second off the school record. Hoh's time in the 200 IM was a 2:05.53, two seconds faster than the previous record. She also led a 1-2-3 Tiger sweep as senior captain Tawney Larm placed second (2:09.14) and junior Kara Bramer (2:10.98) finished third.
Senior Rikki Janes led the 100 back and 200 back events wire-to-wire winning both events. Her victory in the 100 back was her fourth on the season. In the 200 back, she claimed the event in a pool record time of her own, 2:04.89. She not only broke the record, she broke the record, she led a 1-2-3 MU sweep as freshmen Chrissy Frieh and Sarah Stowe claimed second and third respectively.
Not to be forgotten on the night was double winner Jeanna Willi. The junior won the 50 free with a 23.91 followed by a 100 fly victory six events later in 58.52. It marked Willi's second 100 fly win on the season.
The Tigers next meet is tomorrow (Sat., Jan. 29) also at University Natatorium. Both teams will be taking on the nationally ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers at 1:00. NU's men are ranked 17th while the women are rated as the 16th best team in the country.
