
MU Swimmers Sweep Kansas

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The University of Missouri Swimming and Diving teams made history on Saturday night. The Tigers swept the Kansas Jayhawks for the first time in school history. The MU men defeated the Jayhawks for the third straight year by a score of 181-119. The women's team made its' own history with a 170-130 victory over Kansas. The win is the first against Kansas in the history of the women's program. Women's swimming began at Missouri in 1978.
The Missouri women were led by sophomore Leslie Hoh who won three individual events. Hoh won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:05.90 as the Tigers took three of the first four places in that event. Hoh later claimed the 200 breaststroke (2:22.27) and the 200 individual medley (2:08.81).
The Tigers had two other double-winners on the evening. Senior Jeanna Willi was victorious in the 50 freestyle (23.94) and later won the 100 butterfly (58.31). Freshman Sarah Lo also won two individual races. Lo led the Tigers in a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.85 seconds. Sophomores Ellen Cross (58.80) and Chrissy Frieh finished second and third in the event. Lo and Frieh later took first and second places in the 200 backstroke.
The Tigers also swept the relay events. Mizzou's 200-yard freestyle relay team opened the meet with a first place swim of 1:46.71. Missouri finished off the meet with a close victory in the 200-yard medley relay that saw senior Kim Lambert out dual KU's Kim Waite for the win.
Sophomore Katy Chandler won the 200 freestyle for the Tigers while senior diver Kristy Wanner took home first place on the three-meter diving board.
Missouri's "big guns" stepped up on the men's side on Saturday night. Senior Aaron Lo, and sophomores Radu Miclaus and Matt Ferrarelli all won three events for the Tigers. Lo, Mizzou's team captain, cruised to a victory in the 100 breaststroke (58.14) and then won both the 50 free (21.42) and 100 free (46.49).
Miclaus and junior Shane Whildin took first and second place in the 200 butterfly. Miclaus' time of 1:49.65 is a new pool record. Miclaus also dominated the 200 backstroke by over three seconds (1:53.33) and later won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.49.
Ferrarelli got the Missouri men going with a fast first leg of the Tigers' winning 200-medley relay team. He then went on to win the 100 backstroke (51.53), the 200 breaststroke (2:07.21) and 200 individual medley (1:54.57). His win in the 200 IM was by close to four seconds.
Mike Cervenka won the 200 freestyle for Mizzou and divers Jason Otte and Jamie Sweeney ruled the boards. Otte won his first career dual with a win on the three-meter board while Sweeney placed a close second. Sweeney and Otte then took first and second place respectively on the one-meter board.
The Missouri women are next in action this weekend at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. The men's team is off for a week before traveling to Evanston, Ill. for the Northwestern Invitational.
