KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -
The Tiger men's swimming team started off slow in their dual meet against Truman state, each trailing the Bulldogs by 20 points after five events. The Tigers regrouped however and pulled off a hard earned victory, 119-86. In a meet that was alot closer than the final scores indicated, the Bulldogs showed why they are the favorites in NCAA Division II.
"They're (Truman State) a very good team, they have some strong swimmers and are well coached. I told our teams to not let up because they're a division II team and for the first ten events that happened," said head coach Brian Hoffer. "Fortunately we responded after the strong 400 individual medleys by Matt Ferrarelli and Rebecca Wolfe."
The men ended up winning 8 out of 11 events in the meet to improve to 3-1 in dual meets for the season, including three straight victories. Tyler Belanger had three first place finishes in the 50 (21.48) and 100 freestyle (47.32) and as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team (3:11.53) with Chris Lukas, Kyle sanders and Radu Miclaus. Senior Matt Ferrarelli won the 100 backstroke (52.47) and 400 individual medley (4:03.19) and earned a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. Senior Dane Pedersen won the 1000 freestyle (9:54.70) and Blake Davis finished second (10:00.35). Miclaus won the 100 butterfly with a time of 50.88 and Matt North won the 100 breaststroke (59.22) to round out the top finishers.
The team will next compete at the Minnesota Invitational November 22-24 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The next dual meet will be against Kentucky on December 7 in Lexington, Kentucky before starting their winter training. The next home meet is on January 18 against Southwest Missouri State.
NOTES FROM THE DECK: The Tiger diving team did not compete because Truman State does not have a diving team or diving facilities.
