Springfield, Mo. - The University of Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams had several record setting performances Saturday afternoon against the Southwest Missouri State Bears. The Missouri women came out on top winning 160.5 to 77.5, but the men were unable to hold on and fell to the Bears 132.5 to 110.5.
The Missouri women started and ended the meet by setting SMS pool records. To start, the 400-yard medley relay team of Sarah Lo, Mariona Costa, Liz Schoborg and Andrea Nigh combined to finish in 3:54.41, a new SMS pool record.
In the next event, senior Lizza Igoe finished first in the 1,000-yard freestyle followed by freshman Kim Gainey in second place.
In the 200-yard individual medley, junior Megan Morford led Missouri with a first place finish and a time of 2:09.40. Morford was followed closely by freshman Amy Charley, Sarah Lo and Mariona Costa as they finished second, third and fourth.
The 200-yard butterfly turned out to be another race dominated by the Missouri women. Becca Dawson finished in first place with a time of 2:06.54, a new pool record, and was followed by Belinda Wood in second and Laura Pontecore in third.
In the women's last event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the team of Amanda Morford, Lindsay Palbykin, Shannon Hollsten and Liz Schoborg set another SMS pool record to close out the afternoon's competition.
In the diving well, sophomore Nicole Frazier led the Tigers with first place finishes on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Frazier's score on the 1-meter board is a new personal best.
"The women did a great job today against SMS. They swam well, they swam fast and they were very dominating in the races," said Missouri coach Brian Hoffer.
The Missouri men struggled throughout the entire meet to try and get ahead of SMS, but in the end SMS was able to pull away and take the win.
In the 1,000 yard freestyle, freshman Peter Willett set a new personal best and also finished first with his time of 9:41.36.
The Missouri diving duo of Evan Watters and Aaron Wionzek has been nothing short of spectacular this season as they once again claimed the top two spots on both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Watters finished first on both boards as Wionzek finished second on both. Watters' score of 378.38 on the 3-meter board is a Missouri school record and an SMS pool record.
"Evan had a great weekend. He has really been on fire lately," said Head Diving Coach Greg Triefenbach.
At the conclusion of the diving events, Missouri was leading SMS heading into the last few events.
Matt North was able to help the Missouri lead as he finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke. North's time of 2:03.95 is a new SMS pool record.
In the end, the Missouri men's lack of depth really hurt them as SMS was able to pull away and win.
"The meet was close to the end. But again, our lack of depth hurt us. We basically just ran out of swimmers today. Despite the tough loss, I was very pleased with the performances of Evan Watters, Peter Willett and Matt North. Those guys just had a great meet today," said Hoffer.
