SOUTHERN SCUFFLE PREVIEW
- No. 5 Mizzou Wrestling will ring in the New Year by making its eighth team appearance - and first since 2015 - at the Southern Scuffle, Jan. 1-2, in Chattanooga, Tenn. FloWrestling will provide a live stream of the the two-day tournament which features 22 teams and hundreds of wrestlers. In addition to Mizzou, eight other ranked teams - No. 1 Oklahoma State, No. 8 Cornell, No. 9 Lehigh, No. 13 Minnesota, No. 16 Stanford, No. 21 Applachian State, No. 22 Northern Iowa and No. 25 Drexel - are scheduled to send a full squad of starters to the highly competitive tournament.
- In seven previous team trips to the Scuffle, Mizzou has registered a top-five finish each time, including team trophies in 2003 and 2006. Tiger wrestlers have walked away from the Scuffle with 14 individual championships, including Ben Askren, who won the 174 pound championship three times in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Askren was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler in each of those tournaments following his performance. In Mizzou's last appearance - 2015 - Mizzou finished second behind Penn State and claimed three individual championships from Alan Waters (125 pounds), Lavion Mayes (141 pounds) and J'den Cox (197 pounds).
- The Tigers will have six wrestlers seeded in the top-10 when action begins on Sunday, including No. 1 seeds in senior 197-pounder J'den Cox, redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes and redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis. Redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee and redshirt junior 125-pounder Barlow McGhee will begin the tournament as No. 3 seeds, while redshirt senior 141-pounder Matt Manley will begin as the No. 6 seed.
- Last time out, Mizzou picked up two dual victories over Kent State, 34-4, and Appalachian State, 24-13, on Dec. 20. The Tigers won 16 of 20 bouts in the two duals, registering bonus points in seven matches, including two technical falls from Cox and two major decisions from Lavallee. McGhee made his season debut in the double duals, earning wins over Cory Simpson (Kent State) and Vito Pasone (Appalachian State).
NOTABLE NOTES
COX'S ASCENTION UP THE RECORD BOOK
- Senior 197-pounder J'den Cox's outstanding Tiger career will come to an end following the 2016-17 season, but not before he leaves his mark on the Mizzou Wrestling record book.
- The two-time National Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist ranks 10th in program history in career wins with 117 and first in winning percentage among wrestlers with over 100 wins at .959 (117-5). Cox is one of two Tiger wrestlers (Ben Askren) to win two NCAA Titles and one of four (Ben Askren, Max Askren and Drake Houdashelt) to earn All-America honors three times.
- Cox also ranks second in career technical falls with 17 and seventh in career major decisions with 24. The Tiger senior is also nearing the top-10 in career falls with 24. Alan Waters, Mark Cody and Nathan McCormick are all tied for eighth all-time in program history with 27 falls.
COX NAMED TO WIN MAGAZINE'S DON HODGE TROPHY PRESEASON CANDIDATE LIST
- Senior 197-pounder J'den Cox was named to the Dan Hodge Trophy Preseason Candidate List, announced by WIN Magazine on Dec. 9. Cox was one of eight wrestlers named to the list for the Hodge, which is equivalent to the Heisman Trophy in college football, and is the most prestigious award in college wrestling.
- Cox has opened the 2016-17 season with a 9-0 record, including a 6-0 mark in dual competitions. In three of his dual wins, Cox has beaten top-10 opponents, knocking off No. 9 Kevin Beazley (Old Dominion) on Nov. 13, No. 3 Jared Haught (Virginia Tech) on Nov. 20 and No. 6 Kollin Moore (Ohio State) on Dec. 8.
- The Tiger senior captured the UNI Open championship at 197 pounds on Dec. 3, scoring three falls in three matches en route to the title.
LAVALLEE'S HOT START
- After taking a redshirt last season, redshirt junior 157-pounder Joey Lavallee has roared back onto the scene in 2016-17, recording bonus points in eight of 11 wins (four major decisions, one technical fall, one fall) and capturing the UNI championship at 157 pounds on Dec. 3.
- Lavallee is a perfect 9-0 on the season, 4-0 in duals, and is second on the team in dual points with 15. The Tiger junior owns two ranked wins so far this season, defeating No. 17 Sal Mastriani (Virginia Tech) via major decision, 15-5 on Nov. 20 and No. 19 Jake Ryan by way of a 12-5 decision on Dec. 8.
100 WINS FOR MAYES
- Redshirt senior 149-pounder Lavion Mayes recorded his 100th career victory in Mizzou's season-opening dual against Old Dominion. Mayes defeated Michael Hayes by way of a 9-4 decision to reach the century milestone.
- Mayes becomes the 25th member of Mizzou's exclusive 100-win club and first to reach the mark since senior 197-pounder J'den Cox reached the mark last season in a 16-7 major decision win over Aaron Studebaker (Nebraska) on Feb. 21, 2016.
- Mayes currently owns a record of 103-21 and is ranked tied for fourth in program history in career major decisions with 26 and seventh in winning percentage for wrestlers with over 100 wins with a winning percentage of .831 (103-21).
- In a breakout sophomore campaign (2014-15), Mayes went 38-4 at 141 pounds, finishing as an All-American with a seventh-place performance at the NCAA Championships. Mayes went 20-1 in dual competion throughout the year (6-1 in MAC duals) and recorded nine major decisions.
- Last year, Mayes went 32-3 en route to his second straight year on the podium, this time at 149 pounds. Mayes finished third at the weight class in New York City, defeating Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State) in the third place bout after falling to the Cowboy in the quarterfinals.
LEWIS PICKS UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF
- After being named the MAC Freshman of the Year last season following an individual MAC title and a fourth-place All-America finish at NCAAs last season, redshirt sophomore 165-pounder Daniel Lewis has continued to impress this season.
- Lewis is 10-1 on the season, 6-0 in duals and has earned wins over three ranked opponents. Lewis' only loss on the season was to two-time 157 pound NCAA Champion Isaiah Martinez.
MANLEY & MCGHEE RETURN TO THE MAT TO AID THE TIGERS TO VICTORIES OVER KENT STATE, APPALACHIAN STATE
- After missing stretches of the season early on, redshirt senior 141-pounder Matt Manley and redshirt junior 125-pounder Barlow McGhee each returned to the mat in Mizzou's victories over Kent State and Appalachian State on Dec. 20.
- After earning a 3-1 win in TB-1 over No. 20 Emilio Saavedra in Mizzou's season-opening win over Old Dominion on Nov. 13, Manley missed five weeks of competition before returning to the mat against Kent State. Manley defeated Chase Driscoll, 2-1, in Mizzou's 34-4 win over Kent State.
- McGhee made his season debut againt Kent State and Appalachian State, winning both of his matches to open the 2016-17 campaign. First, the Tiger junior defeated Cory Simpson (Kent State), 3-2. Then, he beat Vito Pasone (Appalachian State) via major decision, 11-3.
LEMANOWICZ BACK ON THE ROSTER
- Following the 2015-16 season, redshirt senior 184-pounder Matt Lemanowicz decided to walk away from wrestling and join strength & conditioning coach Mike Larson's staff as an intern. Lemanowicz, who won strength and conditioning awards following the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons, was assisting with the day-to-day operations of the wrestling and volleyball program's routine workouts over the summer and fall.
- When Mizzou suffered numerous injuries to some of its heavier wrestlers, Lemanowicz approached Coach Smith about coming out of retirement and helping the team at 184 pounds. After competing at mostly 165 and 174 pounds over his collegiate career, Lemanowicz was inserted at 184 pounds for the Tigers at the UNI Open and in duals against Ohio State and Ohio.
- Lemanowicz picked up his first dual win of the year over Ohio's Nate Hall on Dec. 11, winning 3-1 in Mizzou's 35-7 rout of the Bobcats.
A QUICK LOOK AT THE FIELD
- Nine ranked wrestlers are included in the 125 pound weight classes, headlinded by No. 3 Dylan Peters (Northern Iowa). Last year, Tiger 125-pounder Barlow McGhee went 1-2 against Peters, losing 7-5 in a Nov. 28 dual before beating Peters to capture the 125 MAC championship on March 6. Peters defeated McGhee, 3-1, in TB-1 in the second round of NCAAs on March 17. No. 18 Vito Pasone (Appalachian State) - who McGhee defeated via major decision, 11-3, on Dec. 20 - will also be in the field at 125 pounds.
- At 133 pounds, four ranked wrestlers will be in the field. Mizzou's lone competitor at 133 pounds, John Erneste, has never faced any of the ranked wrestlers in the field.
- Seven ranked wrestlers will take the mat at 141 pounds, including 2016 NCAA Champion Dean Heil (Oklahoma State). In Tiger 141-pounder Matt Manley's lone meeting with Heil, the Cowboy wrestler came away with a 3-1 decision in a dual in Stillwater, Okla., on Jan. 22.
- Seven more ranked wrestlers will be in action at 149 pounds, including No. 3 Anthony Collica (Oklahoma State). Collica and Mizzou 149-pounder Lavion Mayes have had a back-and-forth battle in their six meeting, spliting the bouts, 3-3. At the 2016 NCAAs, Collica defeated Mayes in the quarterfinals before Mayes came back to defeat Collica to earn third place. The two wrestlers took the mat in an exhibition bout at the NWCA All-Star Classic before the season, with Collica coming away with a 7-5 win.
- At 157 pounds, seven ranked wrestlers will be on display, led by No. 2 Dylan Palacio (Cornell). It will be new territory for Mizzou 157-pounder Joey Lavallee, who has never faced any of the ranked wrestlers in the field.
- Mizzou 165-pounder Daniel Lewis highlights the field at 165 pounds, which will feature eight other ranked wrestlers. Included in the field is No. 5 Mitch Minotti (Lehigh) and No. 9 Chandler Rogers (Oklahoma State).
- Six ranked wrestling and four All-Americans highlight the 174 pound weight class, which may be the deepest of the Scuffle. No. 3 Casey Kent (Penn), No. 5 Brian Realbuto (Cornell), No. 6 Kyle Crutchmer, No. 8 Ethan Ramos (North Carolina) and No. 10 Taylor Lujan (Northern Iowa) will all be in action. Mizzou 174-pounder Dylan Wisman faced Kent in Nittany Lion Open last season, falling via major decision, 16-6, in the third-place bout.
- Two-time NCAA Champion Gabe Dean (Cornell) showcases the field at 184 pounds, which has six ranked wrestlers total. Mizzou 184-pounder Matt Lemanowicz, who has wrestled at 157 and 165 pounds for most of his collegiate career, has not faced any of the ranked wrestlers in the field.
- At 197 pounds will feature Mizzou's No. 1 J'den Cox and No. 2 Brett Pfarr (Minnesota), as well as three other ranked wrestlers. Cox defeated Pfarr twice last season en route to his second NCAA title, first in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational finals, 4-1, then by fall in the third period at 6:29 in the NCAA semifinals.
- At heavyweight, eight ranked wrestlers will be on display, including No. 4 Michael Kroells (Minnesota), No. 8 Nathan Butler (Stanford), No. 9 Billy Miller (Edinboro) and No. 10 Denzel Dejournette (Appalachian State). Tiger heavyweight Austin Myers fell to Dejournette by way of major decision, 10-1, in the Tigers dual with the Mountaineers on Dec. 20.
