Mizzou Soccer Battles No. 7 South Carolina to 1-0 Loss

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Soccer (6-5-1) was unable topple No. 7 South Carolina (10-1), falling 1-0 in a defensive battle on Friday night a Audrey J. Walton Stadium. Freshman goalkeeper McKenna Sheehan (Carry, Ill.) made several key saves in her first career start to keep the Tiger's close, as Mizzou was without two starters.
TURNING POINT
- The Mizzou backline, led by senior Anna Frick (Webster Groves, Mo.), locked down the Gamecocks for much of the match, holding the opposition scoreless through the first half.
- South Carolina Junior Luciana Zullo was able to get her foot on a cross from the right side of the box and put it in the back of the net in the 58' minute – scoring the lone goal on the evening.
QUOTABLE
- "That's the kid we recruited," head coach Bryan Blitz said of his freshman goalkeeper. "It's a tough thing to go against No. 7 (South Carolina). I feel for her to get scored on in that way, but I thought she played a great game."
- "I was pretty nervous, but I know I had to step up for the team," said Sheehan. "I made sure I worked hard in practice and made sure everyone was comfortable having me back there."
NOTEABLE
- Mizzou is second the Southeastern Conference with 59 saves this season.
- The Tigers are 3-5 all-time against the Gamecocks. Their last win against South Carolina came on Sept. 26, 2014.
TOP TIGERS
- Goalkeeper McKenna Sheehan made her first career start in place of Peyton Bauman – who sat out Friday's contest with an illness.
- The freshman recorded four saves and held the Gamecocks scoreless until the 58' minute.

Mizzou will travel to Nashville to take on the Vanderbilt, Thursday Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. CT. The Tigers will travel back home on to face Tennessee at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Audrey J. Walton Stadium. Both matches will be streamed on SEC Network +.
