AUBURN, Ala. - Mizzou earned runner-up honors and set a school record in the women's 200 medley relay as the Tigers opened action at the 2020 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday in Auburn, Ala.
After one day of competition, the Mizzou men sit sixth with 131 points and the women are 10th with 95 points.
TOP TIGERS
A school record 1:35.51 boosted the women's 200 medley relay team of senior Haley Hynes (Lee's Summit, Mo.), freshman Molly Winer (Ames, Iowa), junior Sarah Thompson (Collierville, Tenn.) and sophomore Megan Keil (Derby, Kan.) to second-place honors in the event. The 1:35.61 was one-hundredth of a second faster than the previous time of 1:35.62 set at last year's SEC Championships.
In the diving well, freshman Leonardo Garcia Varela (Cali, Colombia) earned a finals finish in his first SEC event. He placed eighth overall on men's 3-meter with a finals score of 342.65 after notching a career-high 404.7 in the preliminary session.
The Tiger men notched a pair of fifth-place finishes on the day as well. First, the 200 medley relay team of seniors Daniel Hein (Sycamore, Ill.), Nick Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa) and Micah Slaton (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Danny Kovac (Fort Collins, Colo.) touched in 124.90. Mizzou then closed the meet with a 6:19.11 in the 800 free relay as sophomore Jack Dahlgren (Victoria, Minn.), senior Giovanny Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil), sophomore Kyle Leach (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Grant Reed (Austin Texas) took fifth as well.
QUOTABLES
Mizzou Head Coach Andrew Grevers
"I'm really pleased with that time from the women's 200 medley relay and second-place at the SEC Championships. That relay will certainly get better as we give full rest to all our athletes for NCAAs. There are some men on the 200 medley relay with mustaches swimming really fast. It was really exciting to see that relay time for the men's relay, the fastest 50 backstroke in Mizzou history. I'm also really pleased with what Leonardo (Garcia Varela) did this morning to put himself in a great position tonight. That experience was very valuable for one of our freshmen."
