Mizzou Tennis Sweeps Murray State in Home Opener

Mizzou beats Murray State 4-1 in both matches of doubleheader

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mizzou Tennis earned a pair of victories over Murray State on Saturday at the Mizzou Tennis Complex, winning 4-1 in both matches of a doubleheader. Junior Marta Oliveira (Lisbon, Portugal) led the way for the Tigers on the day, as she went 3-0 on the day, including a win at the No. 1 spot in singles play in the second match of the day.

MATCH 1

In the first match of the day, Mizzou won the doubles point after victories on courts 2 and 3. Mizzou's team of Oliveira and freshman Valentina Vazquez Pongruber (Santiago, Chile) won 6-0 over Marit Kreugel and Sarah Bureau, while senior Serena Nash (Bradford, England) and senior Gabrielle Goldin (Bradenton, Fla.) won 6-3 over Gabrielle Geolier and Sara Loncarevic.

In singles action, Mizzou earned wins on court 2, 3 and 5 from Oliveira, senior Ellie Wright (Gainesville, Fla.) and Nash, respectively. Wright and Nash each won in straight sets.

MATCH 2

In the second match, Mizzou and Murray State began with singles competition, where Mizzou earned victories on courts 1, 3, 4 and 6 to clinch the match. Oliveira and Wright won in convincing fashion in straight sets on courts 1 and 3, respectively, while Nash won on court 4 in a three-set comeback, while Vazquez Pongruber won by retirement.

UP NEXT

Mizzou continues action with another doubleheader tomorrow, as the Tigers host Southeast Missouri State on Sunday, Jan. 24. The matches are scheduled to start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. CT at the Green Tennis Center.
