COLUMBIA, Mo. – University of Missouri swimming and diving kicked off the new year with a number of memorable performances to challenge nationally-ranked Louisville, but strong finishes lifted both Cardinals squads to victory over the Tigers Friday afternoon at Mizzou Aquatic Center.
The eighth-ranked Louisville women topped the Tigers, 204-95, and the No. 10 Cardinals defeated Mizzou 193-107, on the men's side.
"We definitely had some great moments," Mizzou head swimming and diving coach Andrew Grevers said. "Grant Bochenski's 100 back was good, and Zoe Schneider winning the 1000 (free) was a great win for her. Jan Zubik's 200 fly was big, as was Emily Roden's performance in the 200 fly…she's battled some big-time injuries and was sidelined for a while, so for her to come back today and win that event after not swimming that race all season long was a huge statement. I'm very proud of the Tigers and their resilience after some very challenging training over the last month and a half, and today certainly sets us up on a great trajectory for the end of the season."
Mizzou diving found success taking first in both women's and men's 3-meter springboard. Gabriela San Juan Carmona took gold with a score of 301.28, while junior Collier Dyer put up 375.60 for first for the men. Dyer also added a win in platform diving with a 383.03 performance. Freshman Deacon Colbert earned his first career podium finish with a score of 335.63 in the platform to take silver.
Roden, a sophomore, took her first gold finish of the season in women's 200 fly with a 1:57.95 performance. Zubik won the men's 200 fly with a 1:42.65 swim to complete the Tigers' first-place sweep of the event.
Bochenski, a Naperville, Illinois native, picked up another win in the 100 back with a time of 45.86. The senior is undefeated in the 100 back at home this season.
Bochenski also helped Luke Nebrich, Francois Malherbe and Darden Tate swim a 1:18.40 in the men's 200 free relay to take gold.
Earning first place in the women's 1000 free, Schneider completed the race in 9:50.49. Senior Jibran Himsieh took first in the men's 1000 free with a finish in 9:14.94.
