Women’s Basketball Falls to BYU in WBIT Second Round

PROVO, UTAH – Mizzou women's basketball fell 93-75 to BYU in the second round of the Women's Basketball Invitation Tournament on Monday night at Marriott Center.
Junior guard Grace Slaughter led Mizzou (17-17, 4-12 SEC) with 17 points, eight rebounds and three assists. With the performance, Slaughter passed Joni Davis (624 - 1983-84) and Sophie Cunningham (624 - 2018-19) for fifth on the program's all-time single-season scoring list.
With the outing, the junior scored 10 or more points in every game this season.
Junior guard Shannon Dowell contributed 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists.
Sophomore Guard Chloe Sotell recorded 17 points, three rebounds and dished a pair of assists.
Redshirt senior Jayla Smith notched 11 points with three rebounds. Smith scored the entirety of her total in the second half.
Both offenses flashed their scoring ability early in the contest as the teams exchanged triples following the opening tip. Slaughter tallied the Tigers' long-range make before Schreacke gave Mizzou an early advantage with an and-1 layup.
BYU (23-11, 9-9 Big 12) closed the quarter on a substantial scoring run and led 28-7 after one.
Mizzou battled back in the opening minutes of the second as Slaughter and Sotell laced long-range shots. Attacking the basket, four Tigers scored around the rim and brought the deficit to 15.
The Cougars responded on the offensive end, but a 3-pointer in the closing seconds by Dowell saw the Tigers trail 27-48 at the half.
Early in the third, Mizzou exchanged baskets with BYU, but was unable to claw into the lead. Smith scored seven in the frame as the Tigers trailed 76-48 headed into the fourth.
Mizzou outscored BYU 27-17 in the final frame as nine Tigers registered baskets. Sotell led all scorers with nine, but the Cougars maintained their advantage and claimed the victory.
The Tigers shot 37 percent from the field compared to a 51 percent conversion rate from BYU.
