Joe Shy was an all-America sprinter who doubled as a world-record setting hurdler for the Mizzou track and field program in the 1940s. He earned all-America honors in 1943 based on his performance at the national meet in the 220-yard dash. He was a four-time Big Six Conference champion: indoor 60-yard hurdles (1942); outdoor 220-yard low hurdles (1942); outdoor 100-yard dash (1943) and outdoor 220-yard dash (1943). He tied the world record in the 60-yard low hurdles in 1942 with a time of 6.9 seconds. As a senior, Shy was pushed into duty in the sprints when Mizzou’s top sprinter – Owen Joggerst – was injured. He went on to go undefeated in the 100- and 220-yard dashes during that outdoor season. The Missouri track team won both the indoor and outdoor Big Six Conference championships in 1943. He was a native of Chillicothe, Missouri.
