COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou Tennis split its Thursday doubleheader at Green Tennis Center on April 2. The Tigers dropped a tight first match against No. 55 Arkansas (4-3) and then claimed a dominant win over SEMO to end the day (4-1).
Match One Arkansas
Missouri opened the day with a hard-fought loss to Arkansas, 4-3.
The Tigers' doubles lineup battled against the Razorbacks but ultimately dropped the doubles point to begin the match.
Sophomore Gian Octa delivered a confident performance at the top of the lineup, earning a straight-set win over 33rd-ranked Caroli Gomez Alonso, 6-4, 6-4. Octa controlled key moments in both sets to give the Tigers an important point early in singles play.
Senior Andrea Artimedi also picked up a dominant win, defeating Alexan Panagiotidou 6-3, 6-2. Artimedi stayed consistent throughout the match and kept the pressure on to close out the victory in straight sets.
Freshman Alex Ackman fell just short for the Tigers in a tightly contested battle against Anet Koskel. After splitting the first two sets, Ackman fought through a third-set tiebreak before falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-7 (4).
Sophomore Korina Roso earned a hard-fought victory in a tightly contested match against Brooke Schafer, beating her opponent 7-5, 6-4 to contribute another point for Missouri to knot things at three apiece before freshman Lara Quaglia fell in a hard-fought battle 6-1, 6-4.
Match Two SEMO
Mizzou earned the doubles point thanks to its matching 6-4 victories over SEMO, first it was Lazar and Roso, and then Octa and Quaglia followed shortly after. MU also held a 5-4 edge and was ahead 40-love in the last standing match with Ackman and Artimedi on top.
The opening pair of singles matches came to an early finish as Rosa won by retirement, and Octa retired before the end of her match. Roso took the first set 6-1 while Octa was ahead in her opening set, 4-3.
Mizzou was able to close the late match with a couple of dominant singles wins. First, Lazar finished a 6-0, 6-0 win, and then Quaglia went 6-1, 6-1 in the clinching match.
Ackman and Artimedi were both ahead in their unfinished singles matches.
