COLUMBIA, MO, -- Amanda Peterson, Jessica Haag and Shannon Brown led a record-setting performance for the Missouri Tigers' gymnastics team on Friday against the 17th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers at Hearnes Center. But in the end the Huskers defeated Mizzou, 194.55-192.575. It was the highest score ever posted by Missouri against Nebraska.
Peterson won the all-around competition with a MU-record score of 39.1, breaking the old record of 38.9, accomplished twice by Kim Leslie (1992 and '94) and Kellie Copeland (1993). Haag was second in the all-around with a career best of 38.85.
Brown led a Tiger charge on the uneven bars, where Mizzou's score of 49.075 shattered the old school record of 48.55, set at last year's Corvette Cup. Brown tied Leslie's school bars record of 9.9 - just the third 9.9 ever posted in any event by a Tiger gymnast. Missouri also got career-high bars scores from Peterson (9.825), Haag (9.825) and Kelly McKinnie (9.725).
Thanks to its performance on bars, Missouri led the meet after two rotations, but Nebraska built an insurmountable lead with a Hearnes Center-record floor exercise score - its third event. Nebraska scored 49.325, topping the old mark of 49.275 (Minnesota in 1997), led by floor co-champs Misty Oxford and Heather Brink, who each scored 9.9.
Brink also won the vault (9.8) and Nebraska's Courtney Brown won the balance beam (9.875).
Missouri closes out a four-meet homestand next week, entertaining BYU, Auburn and New Hampshire for the 19th annual Cat Classic, Friday and Saturday. Competition each night begins at 7 p.m. at Hearnes Center. The team and all-around competition will be contested on Friday, with the individual titles decided on Saturday. Tickets are on sale at the Hearnes Athletic Ticket Office, 1-800-CAT-PAWS. Two-day passes are $10 for adults and $6 for students. Single-session tickets are $6 and $4.
