The University of Missouri men's swimming and diving team began its three-week homestand on Saturday (Jan. 22) against the University of Missouri-Rolla. MU defeated Rolla with a score of 122-75 at the University Natatorium.
The usual suspects led the charge for Mizzou as the Tigers claimed their second straight win over a Missouri school. MU extended its record in dual meet to 5-1 on the season. In the end, the Black and Gold swimmers won nine of the eleven events and established four new pool records.
The Tigers started the meet off with a 1-2 finish in the 400 medley relay. Freshman Radu Miclaus, junior Aaron Lo, sophomore Shane Whildin and junior Mike Cervenka teamed up for the win. Their time of 3:24.79 set a new University Natatorium pool record eclipsing the previous mark of 3:25.64.
Aaron Lo did what Aaron Lo does best-amaze the Missouri swimming community. Lo won the 50 free in a pool record time of 20.57. It was his fastest performance to date in the event during the season. The junior won his third event of the day claiming the 100 free in a time of 46.02, less than one tenth of a second off the pool record.
The other multiple winner for the Tigers was Matt Ferrarelli. The freshman swam to victories in the 200 free and 200 back. His time of 1:50.02 was a new pool record as well as the second fastest time in school history.
Radu Miclaus won his fourth 200 fly of the season. His time of 1:50.23 was the third new pool record set during the competition. Miclaus moved up one place on MU's All-Time top-five with that swim to No. 4.
MU's other winners were senior Randy Swift in the 500 free (4:48.77), sophomore Andy Cole in the 200 IM (1:58.13) and freshman Dane Pedersen in the 1000 free (9:42.92).
Up next for the Tigers is conference foe Nebraska. Both the men's and women's teams will take on the Cornhuskers next Saturday at University Natatorium at 1:00p.m. The NU men bring a No. 17 national ranking into the meet while the women are carrying a No. 16 national ranking. However, before the women meet up with Nebraska, they will first do battle with the University of Iowa on Friday evening at 4:00p.m. at home.
