COLUMBIA, Mo.- The Missouri women's swimming and diving team took care of business on Friday night while the Mizzou men kept things close for as long as they could. The Mizzou women upped their dual meet record to 4-2 on the season with a 133.5-109.5 victory over the Iowa State Cyclones. The Missouri men's team dropped to 4-2 in dual action for the year as they fell 133-108 to Iowa State, the 26th ranked team in the country.
It wasn't until the ninth event of the evening before the Missouri women were able to pull away. Iowa State went 1-2-3 in the 100 butterfly to tie the score at 65.5-65.5, but the Tigers had an answer in the next two events. Mizzou took first and second places in the 100 freestyle and then repeated the feat in the 100 backstroke.
Senior captain KIM LAMBERT, who was one of two Tigers to win two events on the evening, won the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.08. Earlier, she won the 50 freestyle (24.70). Freshman ANDREA NIGH followed Lambert in the 100 free for second place.
Freshman SARAH LO was the winner in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.98 seconds. She was followed by sophomore CHRISSY FRIEH in second place with a time of 59.11.
Senior KRISTY WANNER took care of things on the diving boards for the Tigers. The native of Toronto, Ontario won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
Other Missouri women to claim victories on Friday night were KATY CHANDLER in the 200 freestyle (1:53.68) and LESLIE HOH, who came from behind to win the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:07.56.
The Missouri men had Iowa State on their toes until the last couple of races. The ISU men led 99-88 after 10 events, but MU divers JAMIE SWEENEY and JASON OTTE took first and third respectively on the three-meter board to cut the Cyclones lead to 105-100 heading into the final two events.
Iowa State ended up flexing their muscles in the 100 breaststroke, the 12th event of the evening, as Mike Christianson won the event in a time of 58.57, overtaking Missouri's AARON LO (58.88) during the final lap. ISU took third place while the Tigers' DAN KNUDSON finished fourth.
The Missouri men put together several solid performances on the evening. The highlight of the night was the 200 freestyle where senior MIKE CERVENKA broke the MU Natatorium record with a first place swim of 1:40.17. Cervenka also took second place in the 100 freestyle.
Sophomore MATT FERRARELLI, ranked seventh in the nation in the 200 individual medley, broke his own pool record with a winning time of 1:51.30. Ferrarelli held his own in the 100 backstroke, finishing second to Iowa State's PEDER SKOOG, who broke the pool record with a time of 49.90. Skoog entered the race ranked seventh in the nation in that event.
RADU MICLAUS added a solid win in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.53. JASON OTTE put up a score of 283.28 on the one-meter diving board to help the Tigers sweep the diving events.
