COLUMBIA, Mo.- Just 16 hours after a dual meet against Iowa State at the MU Natatorium on Friday night, the Missouri Tigers were back in the pool on Saturday afternoon. Both the Missouri men's and women's teams made quick work of Southwest Missouri State. The MU women (5-2) hammered the Lady Bears by a score of 162-76 while the Missouri men (5-2) took it to SMS 135-106.
The Missouri men's team won in impressive fashion by breaking three MU Natatorium records on the day. Tiger senior MIKE CERVENKA, swimming his last home meet of his career, won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:39.89, breaking the pool record that he set last night against Iowa State. Joining Cervenka with new pool records on the day were sophomores MATT FERRARELLI and RADU MICLAUS. Ferrarelli, ranked seventh in the country in the 200 backstroke, posted a winning mark of 1:48.40. Miclaus, ranked 22nd in the nation in the 200 butterfly, won the race in a time of 53.82.
While his teammates were setting records, senior captain AARON LO was setting the tone for the meet. Lo, also swimming for the final time at home, won both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. He blew away the field in the 50 free with a time of 21.02. His winning time in the 100 free was 46.35.
Aaron wasn't the only Lo lighting up the pool on Saturday. His freshman sister, SARAH LO, gave the Missouri women a glimpse of the future. The younger Lo won both the 200 individual medley (2:09.47) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.17).
While Lo took care of the business in the strokes for the women, senior KRISTY WANNER capped off an impressive weekend on the diving boards. Fresh off winning both the one-meter and three-meter diving events on Friday night, Wanner swept the field again on Saturday. The Tigers took both first and second places on both boards on Saturday. Sophomore KELLY POZZOLI recorded the highest finish of her career with a second place finish on the one-meter board. Junior ERIN WILKE was second for Mizzou in the three-meter event.
Sophomore JAMIE SWEENEY swept the diving events on the men's side. Sweeney recorded 318 points on both boards on Saturday.
On the women's side, all three seniors enjoyed victories in their last home meet. Besides Wanner, captain KIM LAMBERT won the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.82. She was a double-winner on Friday night against Iowa State. KARA BRAMER was also a winner for the Tigers with a time of 1:56.55 in the 200 freestyle.
Other winners for the Tigers were DAN KNUDSON for the men in the 200 breaststroke, and KATY CHANDLER (1000 freestyle), ELLEN CROSS (50 freestyle) and MOLLY VETTER (200 butterfly) for the women.
The Missouri women travel to Iowa City, Iowa for a dual with the University of Iowa this Friday night before jumping back onto the bus and meeting the men in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday for a date with Big 12 foe Nebraska.
