Columbia, Mo.-- Despite sophomore Leah Gremaud's second balance beam win in as many weeks, the University of Missouri gymnastics team fell prey to the Iowa State Cyclones, 196.475-190.500 in the 11th Annual AT&T Broadband Gymnastics X-Treme. Gremaud put up a score of 9.850 tying ISU's Shelly Kringen for top beam honors.
ISU's mark of 196.475 is a season-high for the Cyclones and is the second-highest mark a Tiger opponent has put up this season behind Nebraska's 197.050 on Jan. 28. ISU also broke X-Treme records in all four events averaging a score of 49.125 per event on Sunday.
Coach Rob Drass said that the Tigers were not as mentally prepared as they should have been and that ISU was in a zone, hitting 24 of 24 routines.
"Its tough to compete when they (ISU) are getting everyone's best efforts," Drass said. "They hit every routine and we struggled from the out set of the meet. We need to come into each event more mentally focused on hitting our routines and taking care of business."
The Tiger were solid to open the meet on vault, recording a score of 47.600. However, bars is where the trouble began. After three solid routines and a career-high mark of 9.500 by sophomore Shannon Brett, the Tigers had three falls. After a fall on beam, sophomore Laura Forbes put on a great show for the 740 in attendance on floor recording a career-high 9.775 but it wasn't enough to make a dent in the Cyclone lead.
The loss drops the Tigers to 3-4 and 0-2 in the Big 12 and wraps up Missouri's four-meet home stand. MU travels to BYU on Friday and Utah State on Saturday for a Utah double- dip before heading to Norman, Oklahoma on Feb. 24 to take on OU. The Tigers faced BYU earlier this month in the State Farm Cat Classic with the Cougars taking the team title while Mizzou finished in second place. Next home action for the Tigers will be on March 4 as the Tigers host the 7th Annual Lathrop and Gage Corvette Cup. For ticket information, call 1-800-CAT PAWS.
