COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri's swimming and diving teams ended the regular season on a high note on Saturday afternoon in Evansville, Ind. The Mizzou women raced past the Lady Aces of the University of Evansville by a score of 135-87. The Tigers finish the dual meet season with a record of 6-4. The Missouri men concluded the dual season with a record of 6-3 as they dominated Evansville by a count of 142-79.
After falling behind after the first race of the day, the Tigers used a one-two finish in the 1000 freestyle to take the lead and never looked back. Senior KARA BRAMER, swimming in her final career dual meet, got the ball rolling with a victory in the 200 freestyle (1:56.12). The Tigers took first, second and fourth places in that event with junior MOLLY VETTER (1:56.62) finishing a close second and SARAH STOWE (1:58.67) locking up fourth place.
Missouri led 43-27 heading into the fifth race of the day, the 200 individual medley, where SARAH LO (2:09.43) and LESLIE HOH (2:11.93) finished first and second to give the Tigers a commanding 58-31 advantage.
The Tiger divers put the meet out of reach on the one-meter diving board. Missouri's divers swept the first three places, led by sophomore KELLY POZZOLI who won the event to record her first career victory. Senior KRISTY WANNER finished a close second while junior ERIN WILKE placed third. Wanner would go on to win the three-meter competition, giving her nine wins in her last 10 events.
The Lady Tigers also picked up victories from ELLEN CROSS (59.22) in the 100 backstroke and SARAH STOWE in the 500 freestyle. Freshman ANDREA NIGH finished second in the 50 freestyle in a very fast time of 23.91.
The Missouri men never trailed Evansville on Saturday. As a matter of fact, the Tigers produced the winner in every event but two. Sophomore MATT FERRARELLI once again led the charge winning both the 400 individual medley and the 200 backstroke, both events that he has a chance to win at the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas beginning March 1. Ferrarelli blew away the field in both events, winning the 400 IM in a time of 3:58.12 and the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:50.17.
Senior MIKE CERVENKA kept his second semester undefeated streak alive in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:41.43. RADU MICLAUS, ranked 22nd the nation in the 200 butterfly, won the event in a time of 1:50.55. STEPHEN DURLEY (4:43.29) was the winner in the 500 freestyle.
In one of the events the Tigers did not win, senior AARON LO finished second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.65. Lo swam the first 50 yards of the event in 20.40 seconds, close to a lifetime best.
The Missouri women will travel to Austin, Texas in two weeks (Feb. 15-17) for the 2001 Big 12 Championships. The Tiger men will go through normal training this week before hitting it hard in preparation for their Big 12 Championships that begin on March 1 in Austin.
