BATON ROUGE, La. -- Opening the 2006 campaign, the #16 Missouri gymnastics team finished sixth with a 192.700 at the Super Six Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. Friday night. Fourth ranked Alabama won the meet with a 194.250 while #8 Nebraska narrowly edged out #11 Iowa State 194.100 to 194.050 to take second place. #Seventh ranked LSU earned a 193.900 to finish fourth while 15 Auburn took fifth place with a 193.675. Senior Jodie Heinicka tied for fifth on the uneven bars after recording a 9.850.
"I thought we did a really great job tonight, especially since it was the first meet of the season," said Missouri head coach Rob Drass. "Considering the environment, the five other great teams and the fact we're a young team trying to make our mark, this was a great start for us."
Mizzou started things off strong on bars with a 48.675, led by Heinicka's 9.850. Freshmen Alicia Hatcher and Adrianne Perry showed poise in their collegiate debuts with a 9.775 and 9.725, respectively. Perry's score was a career high on the event.
The Tigers then moved to beam, where they scored a 47.855 as senior Lauren Schwartzman and sophomore Katie Kluga both earned 9.700s. After a third rotation bye, Perry and Schwartzman led the way on floor with 9.675 apiece while junior Amanda Pezzullo added a 9.600 as the Tigers recorded a 47.725.
Mizzou closed out the night on vault with a 48.425 as Heinicka anchored the Tigers with a 9.775 and junior Whitney Crater posted a 9.750.
"Bars was the highlight of the night for us," said Drass. "The momentum shifted after floor because we have a few issues we need to clear up but we responded pretty well on vault to finish the night. There were a few errors but if we fix those, we're right up there with the best teams in the country."
The Tigers open their home schedule in the second annual Pink Out meet against No. 20 Arkansas on Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hearnes Center. Mizzou, together with University of Missouri Healthcare and Ellis Fischel Cancer Hospital, will help promote breast cancer awareness and research efforts. The first 500 fans will get free t-shirts and $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center to benefit breast cancer research.
