
Gymnastics Falls to West Virginia

Columbia, Mo--Missouri gymnastics opened the 2011 season with a 194.500-191.575 loss in Cancun, Mexico this evening. The Tigers took advantage of the wonderful weather conditions Mexico by getting ahead early in the meet, but the Mountaineers took the lead by just over a point in the third rotation.
Freshman Brittani Price led off the first rotation for the Tigers sticking her vault and earning a 9.825. Gold stepped into her leadership role earning a 9.850, the highest score of the rotation. Sophomore Brittany Bendoff contributed a 9.775 for Mizzou, topping her career high 9.725 score on vault.
Sandra Ostad also broke a career high this meet, she topped her score on bars to set her new career high at 9.775 and take first in the meet. Allie Heizelman closed out the second rotation for Mizzou earning a 9.725 on her bar routine earning the second place spot. Sophomore Lauren Swankoski earned a 9.550 on the event while Gold finished with a 9.675. Freshman Taylor Medrea scored a 9.650 helping the Tigers total 48.375 on bars. After the second rotation Missouri still maintained a 97.275-96.850 lead over West Virginia.
West Virginia took the lead in the third rotation with a 145.450 total over the Tigers' 144.350, be which proved to be the decision. Junior Mary Burke led Mizzou on beam scoring a 9.825. Gold also stepped up, earning a 9.725. Medrea tallied a 9.150 for Mizzou, and Alex Skinner earned an 8.700 with a fall.
The Tigers looked to come back on floor, but the Mountaineers proved to be a tough match. WVU earned a 49.05 on beam which was just over the Tigers' 47.225 on floor. Swankoski led the rotation earning a 9.850 score on her routine. The score earned her a first-place finish on the event. Tori Howard scored 9.750 on her energetic routine and Mary Burke followed up with 9.325.
Next up the Tigers face SEMO at the fifth annual Beauty and the Beast meet on Saturday, Jan. 15. Mizzou wrestling will be facing Chattanooga and SIUE.
