
Mizzou Takes Third in Session One of the SEC Championship

DULUTH, Ga. - The Mizzou gymnastics team scored a 195.700 to place third in session one of the 2015 SEC Gymnastics Championship Saturday afternoon in Duluth, Ga. Georgia placed first in the opening session with a 196.000, followed by Arkansas in second (195.950) and Kentucky in fourth (195.025). Florida, LSU, Alabama and Auburn will compete in the evening session. Missouri's score of 195.700 was the team's highest-ever total in an SEC Championship, besting the 195.525 set in 2013.
In the first session, senior Laura Kappler took second in the all-around with a career high-tying 39.200 and tied for second on beam (9.850).
Opening the meet on floor, the Tigers started strong with a 49.075 on floor in the first rotation, the team's sixth score over 49.000 on the event this season. Freshman Kennedi Harris paced Missouri with a team best 9.850, her ninth straight score of 9.800 or higher on the event. Senior Briana Conkle ranked second on the squad with a 9.825, while Kappler, sophomore Alyson Heimsath and freshman Becca Schugel each received 9.800s. The Tigers sat second as a team after the first rotation, trailing just Georgia (49.125).
A 48.850 on vault in the second rotation kept Missouri in second place with a running score of 97.925. Senior Katelyn Trevino stuck her vault in the fourth spot to earn a 9.850, tops among the team. Kappler had a 9.800, followed by Harris with a 9.775, sophomore Angie Kern with a 9.725 and Heimsath with a 9.700.
With a 49.000 on bars in rotation three, Mizzou took over the team standings with one event left. Four different Tigers notched scores of 9.800 or better on bars, led by Trevino's career high-tying 9.825. Senior Becca Johnson started Missouri's strong event with a 9.800 in the leadoff spot, while Schugel and junior Miranda Eubank also received 9.800s. Freshman Shauna Miller got a 9.750 and Kappler was awarded a 9.750.
The Tigers led session one by 0.225 with just beam remaining but strong rotations from Georgia on floor (49.350) and Arkansas on vault (49.250) put Missouri third in session one at the end of the meet. Missouri hit all six beam routines and notched a session high 48.775 on the event. Kappler's 9.850 stood best among the Tigers, followed by a 9.775 from freshman Kelli Martin, 9.725s from Miller and Heimsath and a 9.700 from freshman Tia Allbritten.
Missouri awaits its NCAA Regional selection, which will be announced on Monday, March 23 at 2 p.m. CT.
