Katelyn Trevino Named SEC Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou gymnastics redshirt senior Katelyn Trevino (Ovilla, Texas) was named the Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the league announced on Thursday (March 26). Additionally, senior Laura Kappler (Evansville, Ind.) and freshman Becca Schugel (Eagan, Minn.) earned spots on the All-SEC and All-Freshman teams, respectively.
Trevino was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a vote by the SEC head coaches, while Kappler and Schugel earned their honors from their performances at the recent SEC Championship.
Trevino earned her bachelor's degree in Communications with a minor in Spanish from Missouri, and is currently working towards her Master of Education in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Positive Coaching, boasting a 3.967 grade point average. After missing the most of the last two seasons with season-ending injuries, she has competed on bars all 12 meets and in the vault lineup the final eight meets of the season, setting new career highs on both events. Trevino scored over a 9.8 on vault five times this season, including a career high 9.900 on vault on Feb. 8, winning the vault title. She also scored a career-high 9.825 on bars each of the last two meets, including the 2015 SEC Championship.
The All-SEC Team is comprised of the student-athletes with the top two scores (including ties) on each event and in the All-Around competition in the first session and second sessions of the SEC Championship. The All-Freshman Team is comprised of the freshmen student-athlete with the top score (including ties) on each event in the first session of the SEC Championship and the student-athlete with the top score (including ties) on each event in the second session of the SEC Championship. The All-Freshman Team also includes the freshmen student-athletes with the top two all-around scores (including ties) in the first session of the SEC Championship and the freshmen student-athletes with the top two all-around scores (including ties) in the second session of the SEC Championship.
