Freshman Britney Ward claimed the vault and beam titles against the Crimson Tide
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 14 Mizzou gymnastics team scored a season best 196.050 in a 197.175-196.050 loss at No. 6 Alabama Friday night at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Freshman Britney Ward (Ozark, Mo.) won both the vault and beam titles with career high scores, while freshman Morgan Porter (Overland, Mo.) took home the all-around crown.
Ward notched event-winning scores of 9.925 on vault and 9.900 on beam to claim top honors on both apparatus' for the third and fourth event titles of her brief Tiger career. Porter totaled a 39.200 in the all-around, highlighted by a 9.850 on bars and a 9.825 on floor, to take the win.
The Tigers opened the meet with a strong bars rotation of 49.025, which included four scores of 9.800 or higher. Porter paced the Tigers with a 9.850 on the event, followed closely behind by classmates Madeleine Huber (St. Louis, Mo.) and Brooke Kelly (Birmingham, Ala.) with 9.825. Also tallying a 9.800 was sophomore Becca Schugel (Eagan, Minn.), who's score marked a season best on the apparatus. Additionally, sophomore Shauna Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched a 9.750 and freshman Allison Bower (Mesa, Ariz.) had a 9.725.
Vault featured career bests from two different Tigers as the team combined to tally a season high event score 49.025. In addition to Ward's 9.925, sophomore Kennedi Harris (Atlanta, Ga.) erupted for her best of 9.875, junior Angie Kern (Columbia, Mo.) and Porter both scored 9.750s.
In the third rotation, three scores of 9.825 of higher paced the Tigers to a 48.900 on the event. Harris and freshman Michaelee Turner (Parkville, Mo.) led the way with 9.850s, a score that marked a new best for the Turner. Porter added a 9.825 and Kelly went 9.775 to help the squad.
A season best beam tally of 49.075 on beam concluded the strong night for the Tigers. Ward's career best 9.900 led a Mizzou rotation that also featured a career best-tying 9.850 from Kelly and a career high 9.800 from Bower. Also with solid routines were Porter (9.775), sophomore Tia Allbritten (Garland, Texas) (9.750) and Schugel (9.700).
Mizzou returns home next weekend as the Tigers host No. 15 Georgia at Mizzou Arena on Friday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Pink Out meet.
