COLUMBIA, Mo. - The No. 19 Mizzou gymnastics team opens postseason competition at the 2019 Southeastern Conference Championships on Sautrday, March 23 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, La. The Tigers will compete in the afternoon session at 3 p.m. with No. 10 Alabama, No. 12 Auburn and No. 20 Arkansas, while No. 3 LSU, No. 4 Florida, No. 8 Georgia and No. 9 Kentucky will go in the evening session at 7 p.m. CT. SEC Network will broadcast the afternoon session, while ESPN2 will air the second session.
TIGER TIDBITS
- Missouri held steady at No. 19 in this week's national rankings.
- Last time out, Mizzou scored a season-high 196.800 to tie for second in a quad meet at the Hearnes Center on March 15.
- No. 9 Minnesota won the meet with a 196.900, just ahead of Mizzou and No. 7 Michigan with identical 196.800s. Centenary placed fourth with a 189.200.
- Missouri also scored 49.425s on beam and floor, which were both season-bests for those events.
- The 49.425 on beam was the second-highest score on the event in program history, and the sixth-best total on floor in Missouri history.
- Redshirt junior Morgan Porter notched season bests on three events and in the all-around in the quad. She recorded a 39.500 in the all-around, her second-highest all-around total of her career, as well as a 9.925 on floor and 9.9s on bars and beam.
- Mizzou's win over Kentucky on March 1 was the team's first top 10 win of the season and the first since it knocked off No. 5 Florida on March 2, 2018.
- Mizzou is one of only five teams nationally that has scored 49 or better on floor in every meet in 2019, joining No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Utah and No. 15 Oregon State.
- Additionally, the Tigers have gone at least 49 on floor in 12 consecutive meets, dating back to the 2018 NCAA Regional. The 12-meet span is a program record, besting the seven meet stretch from Feb. 19 - April 10, 2010.
- Against Alabama on Feb. 1, the Tigers scored at least 49.100 on all four events for the first time this season and the fourth time under Head Coach Shannon Welker's tenure at Mizzou.
- The previous times Missouri went 49.100 on all events under Welker was at the State of Missouri Meet on March 16, 2018, against Auburn on March 3, 2017 and at Florida on Feb. 24, 2017.
- The only two other times Mizzou tallied 49.1 on all four events were at the Cat Classic on Feb. 6, 2004 and at the Texas Woman's Invitational on March 12, 2004.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Mizzou gymnastics team erupted for a season-high 196.800 to tie for second in the regular season finale on March 15 at the Hearnes Center. No. 9 Minnesota took first with 196.900 points, just ahead of Mizzou and No. 7 Michigan with identical tallies of 196.800. Centenary finished fourth with a team total of 189.200.
- The Tigers notched the second-highest beam score and sixth-best floor total in program history in the final two rotations, with totals of 49.425 on both events. Both scores were also season-highs.
- Redshirt junior Morgan Porter tied for the floor title with a season-best 9.925 en route to a 39.500 in the all-around, the second-highest all-around total in her Tiger career.
- Trailing Michigan by 0.525 and Minnesota by 0.300 heading into the final rotation, Mizzou closed the night with a 49.425 on floor to close the gap with the Gophers and ultimately tie Michigan for second in the team race.
- The 49.425 on floor, the team's highest score on the event since Missouri went 49.475 against Lindenwood and Southeast Missouri State on Feb. 5, 2016, was highlighted by two scores of 9.9 or higher and all six routines going at least a 9.825. Porter anchored the lineup with a 9.925, which was a season-best and stands as her second-highest-ever floor score, to tie Michigan's Olivia Karas for the event crown.
- Junior Aspen Tucker also reached the 9.9 mark with a 9.9 in the fifth-spot, and senior Michaelee Turner and sophomore Gabrielle Gottula both earned marks of 9.875, which was a season-high for Turner. Senior Allison Bower led off the rotation with a 9.85 and junior Mary Nicholson added a 9.825.
- Missouri opened the meet with a 48.900 on vault, paced by a career-high-tying 9.85 from freshman Frances Bidwill. Porter and sophomore Chelsey Christensen both tallied 9.775s and Gottula and Tucker claimed scores of 9.75.
- Porter had another season-high on bars in the second rotation, where she scored a season-best 9.9 as the Tigers went 49.050 as a team. Both seniors Becca Schugel and Brooke Kelly matched season-highs with tallies of 9.85 and 9.8, respectively, while Christensen earned a 9.775.
- The Tigers notched the second-highest beam score in program history thanks in part to three career marks in the lineup. A career-best 9.925 from Gottula led the way for Missouri, and Porter went 9.9 in the final spot in the lineup. Nicholson and Kelly both went 9.875, a score that tied Nicholson's career-high and was a new season-best for Kelly. Bower also tied her personal-best with a 9.85 and sophomore Lauren Clevenger added a 9.8.
MISSOURI CLOCKS IN AT NO. 19 IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
- Mizzou remains in the No. 19 spot in this week's national rankings with a National Qualifying Score of 196.385.
- The Tigers also rank 15th on floor, 21st on beam and 22nd on vault and bars.
TIGERS HITTING ON FLOOR
- The Tigers are one of only five teams that have scored at least 49 on floor in every meet so far in 2019.
- Mizzou joins No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Florida, No. 6 Utah and No. 14 Oregon State as the only programs to reach the 49 mark on floor all year.
- The Tigers have floor scores of 49.425 in their home quad, 49.400 against Kentucky, 49.275 against Georgia, 49.225 at LSU, 49.200 against Alabama and at Florida and the Mardi Gras Invitational, a 49.100 at the Metroplex Challenge, 49.075 against Auburn, 49.050 at Arizona State, and 49.000 at the State of Missouri Meet.
MIZZOU IN PROGRAM-RECORD FLOOR STRETCH
- The Tigers are also in the midst of a program-record 12 meet stretch with scores of 49 or higher.
- Missouri's floor span dates back to the NCAA Regional on April 7, 2018 and includes every meet of 2019.
- The 12-meet span is a program-long for the Tigers, surpassing the previous high of seven set from Feb. 19, 2010 until April 10, 2010.
MISSOURI GOES SEASON-HIGH 196.800 IN REGULAR SEASON FINALE
- Missouri scored a season-best 196.800 on March 15 in a home quad meet against No. 7 Michigan, No. 9 Minnesota and Centenary.
- The team score bested the previous high of 196.550 recorded against Alabama on Feb. 1.
- The Tigers also tallies 2019 highs on both beam and floor, with identical scores of 49.425.
- The 49.425 stands as the second-highest beam score in program history, only behind the 49.500 notched against Kentucky on March 10, 2017.
- Additionally, the 49.425 was the sixth-best floor score in Mizzou history, and the team's highest since a 49.475 in the State of Missouri Meet on Feb. 5, 2016.
PORTER GOES BIG
- Redshirt junior Morgan Porter notched season-bests on three events and in the all-around in a home quad meet on March. 15.
- She recorded a 39.500 in the all-around as well as a 9.925 on floor and 9.9s on bars and beam.
- The 39.500 marks the second-highest all-around score of her Tiger career, trailing only the 39.675 set against Arkansas on March 4, 2016.
- Additionally, he all-around, beam and floor scores were the highest since her freshman season in 2016, before she suffered an Achilles injury in January 2017.
- At the quad meet, Porter tied Michigan's Olivia Karas for the floor title.
- It was her fifth event title of the season, all of which have come in the last three meets.
TIGERS TAKE DOWN NO. 10 KENTUCKY
- Missouri posted a 196.250-196.000 win over No. 10 Kentucky on March 1 for its first top 10 win of the season.
- It was also Mizzou's second Southeastern Conference win of the season, as the quad also downed Arkansas on Jan. 26.
- The win over the Wildcats was the Tigers' first over a top 10 team since they earned a 196.925-196.700 upset over No. 5 Florida on March 3, 2018.
FOUR TIGERS CLAIM TITLES AGAINST WILDCATS
- Four different Tigers won event crowns against Kentucky on March 1.
- Redshirt junior Morgan Porter won the all-around with a 39.325, as well as tying for the floor and bars titles, with scores of 9.9 or 9.85, respectviely.
- Redshirt senior Becca Schugel matched Porter's bars total of 9.85 for her first event win of the season, and 11th of her career.
- Additionally, junior Apsen Tucker and Gabrielle Gottula also tallied 9.9s on floor to tie for the floor crown. It was Tucker's fifth event win of the season, including her third on floor, and 15th of her career.
- Gottula's win marked the first of her Tiger career.
