COLUMBIA, Mo. – The University of Missouri soccer team dropped a home contest to the Tennessee Lady Volunteers on Thursday, Oct. 19, by a score of 3-2. The Tigers move to 5-7-3 for their 2023 campaign, including a 1-5-1 record in SEC play. The win moves Tennessee to 8-1-4 on its season. The Lady Volunteers outshot Mizzou 12-7 and topped the Tigers on corners, 3-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The majority of the first half remained scoreless, despite Tennessee applying pressure on the Tiger defense. Missouri redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Bella Hollenbach was up for the challenge, racking up three saves in the half. In the 43rd minute, The Lady Vol's pressure proved too much as Sizzy Lawton put one in the top right corner of the net, taking a 1-0 lead heading to the break.

Tennessee took quick control of the second half with a goal in the first minute of play. However, Mizzou's comeback trail would begin quickly as freshman Brianna Buels put one in the top right of the goal in the 55th minute, closing the deficit to 2-1. UT would extend their lead once again but would give way to a Missouri penalty kick on a handball. Sophomore Kylee Simmons would score on the kick in the 64th minute, closing the gap once again to 3-2. Despite multiple offensive pushes late in the match, the Tigers could not close the gap.

GAME NOTES

Missouri is 2-10-1 against Tennessee all-time, with the Lady Vols taking the last three matches.
Hollenbach made her 11th start recording six saves.
Buels scored her third goal of the season in the 55th minute, the most by any freshman this season.
Simmons scored her 11th goal of the season with a penalty kick in the 65th minute, becoming the first tiger to reach 11 goals since Julissa Cisneros in 2019.
