FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou baseball earned another seven-inning, run-rule victory in game two of its series with New Haven, 17-5, on Saturday afternoon at Terry Park to clinch the series win. The Tigers (4-2, 0-0 SEC) will aim to complete the series sweep of the Chargers (0-2, 0-0 NEC) on Sunday at noon CT.
Right-hander Josh McDevitt picked up his second win of the season to improve to 2-0 with another strong performance on the mound Saturday afternoon. He went five full innings and allowed two runs on two hits to go along with a career-high seven strikeouts. The Tigers out-hit the Chargers 15-2 on their way to their second-straight run-rule victory.
The Mizzou offense jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning with an RBI single off the bat of Tyler Macon that brought freshman Leo Humbert and Isaiah Frost into score.
In the third, the Tigers extended their lead to eight after putting up a six spot. The scoring started with Chris Patterson putting the ball in play and reaching on an error that scored Sam Parker, who led the inning off with a double. Humbert added to the lead with a bases-loaded RBI double down the left field line that plated Patterson and Serna, followed by an RBI single from Frost that brought Maisonet and Humbert in to score. With the bases loaded, Jamal George took a walk that brought Frost in, extending the lead to 8-0 to end the third.
Mizzou put up three more runs in the fourth inning on zero hits, thanks to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch taken by Macon that brought Maisonet in for his second run of the day and a ground ball fielder's choice from Pierre Seals that scored Humbert and Frost following an error by the Chargers' defense. Mateo Serna's bat came alive in the fifth inning with a double to deep center field, bringing Knutson home, followed by a sacrifice fly to center from Macon that brought Serna in to score, extending the Tigers lead to 13-2.
The Tigers weren't done yet. In the sixth inning, Juliomar Campos entered the game to catch for Serna and then came to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning. The freshman backstop delivered with a bases-clearing double to left center field, followed by an RBI single from Maisonet to put Missouri on top 17-3.
With another seven-inning run-rule in sight, Keagan Kohlhoff and Eli Skidmore entered in the seventh to close things out. The freshmen duo combined for the final inning while allowing two runs, but it wasn't enough for New Haven as the Tigers claimed the game and the series.
