FORT MYERS, Fla. – Mizzou baseball earned its third-straight seven-inning, run-rule victory in the series finale over New Haven, 16-2, at Terry Park on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers (5-2, 0-0 SEC) outscored the Chargers (0-3, 0-0 NEC) 45-9 for the dominant series victory – their second-straight series win to open the season.
Lefty Brady Kehlenbrink had another strong outing in his second start of the season for the Tigers, tossing five full innings and allowing two runs on four hits while punching out seven batters to earn his second win of the season.
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning, the Tigers' offense bounced back in a strong way, putting up eight runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Parker got Mizzou on the board with a two-run double down the right field line that scored Tyler Macon and Pierre Seals. A bases-loaded hit by pitch taken by Blaize Ward, followed by a bases-clearing, three-run triple off the bat of Macon and an RBI single from Seals put the Tigers up 8-1 at the end of the first inning.
The Tigers proceeded to put up one run apiece in the second, third and fourth innings to extend the lead to 10 runs and put the game in run-rule territory for the third-straight day.
With another run-rule victory in sight, the Tigers poured on three more runs in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth. Shortstop Eric Maisonet hit a towering solo shot to deep right field for his first home run as a Tiger to start the scoring in the fifth before an RBI hit-by-pitch by Parker and an RBI single from Campos put the Tigers on top, 14-3.
In the sixth, Jordan took a bases-loaded walk that forced in Ward from third for the first run of the inning, and Peyton Basler came in to score following a fielder's choice off the bat of Seals for the game's final run.
The Tigers bullpen was efficient in the win, throwing a pair of scoreless innings in relief of Kehlenbrink. Left-hander Juan Villarreal entered the game in the sixth inning and proceeded to throw a scoreless, no-hit inning with a pair of strikeouts. Fellow southpaw Ian Lohse closed things out for the Tigers in the seventh, striking out the side in his only inning of work.
