Freshman Reese Roberts led the Mizzou men's golf team at the Michael A. Marino Classic this week, collecting his first collegiate top-20 finish at the three-day event.
Roberts finished with a career-best 215 (69-74-72) and his first collegiate tournament under par at -1. Placing 17th overall in the 90-player field, Roberts wrapped up with tournament with an even-round 72, going two-under over the final six holes to finish under par overall. During the 54 holes of play, he collected 10 birdies to lead Mizzou in scoring for the first time in his career.
"I was happy with how the week went and I felt more comfortable with my game than I have felt all year," Roberts said. "My main focus was going through my pre-shot routine the same way no matter how good or how bad the round was going. A top-20 finish is big for my confidence going forward the rest of the season and I hope to keep the good golf going."
As a team overall, Mizzou placed 12th in the 16-team field with a score of +19. NC State won the tournament, while the Tigers finished ahead of one top-50 school in UNLV over the three days.
"It was great to see Reese have a good week out here," said Mizzou head coach Glen Millican. "It is a great course and test for our team. We're now looking forward to our drive down to Charleston and getting back in action at Bulls Bay."
Veikka Viskari placed second on the team and 36th overall at +4 (74-71-75). Virgilio Paz at +8 (77-72-75), Trent Mierl at +9 (76-72-77), Brock Snyder at +12 (78-74-76) and Esteban Cruz Bonilla at +15 (82-73-76) rounded out the team's performance.
Mizzou returns to action on Sunday, opening play at The Hootie at Bulls Bay.
