The Tigers earn their first SEC sweep since the 2024 season, as they are now 4-5 in conference play.
AUBURN, Ala. - Mizzou softball (19-18, 4-5 SEC) busted out the brooms for the first time this season, as it bested Auburn (23-13, 2-7 SEC),6-4, to finalize the series sweep on Sunday, March 29, at Jane B. Moore Field.
Freshman Abby Carr hit the go-ahead two-run home run in the fifth inning, as junior Marissa McCann picked up the win after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
This time around, it was Mizzou who started with defensive woes, as an error in the first scored one for Auburn. However, starting pitcher Cierra Harrison got out of the jam with limited damage, as she posted back-to-back strikeouts with bases loaded.
Junior Stefania Abruscato took the lead from Auburn at the top of the third, with a two-run shot, making it 2-1, as she recorded her fifth home run in eight games – sixth of the season. In the bottom half of the inning, Harrison exited the game after allowing a runner on first with one out. The senior's final line would be 2.1 innings pitched, with three strikeouts and one earned run against. That earned run came, as Auburn singled home two with bases loaded after freshman Abby Carr came in in relief, making it 3-2 in its favor.
Carr found herself in trouble in the bottom of the fourth with two on, before junior Marissa McCann replaced her. Carr ended her day with one inning pitched, allowing two runs. Auburn capitalized with the runners on as it hit a sacrifice fly to go up 4-2.
Mizzou found its way back on top in the front part of the fifth, as a single from junior Abby Hay cut the lead in half – Auburn leading 4-3. With Hay on first, the other Abby (Carr) blasted a two-run shot to center field to give Mizzou the 5-4 lead. MU added once more to its lead in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from freshman Addy Waits. That run would not have been possible without a triple from junior Claire Cahalan, as she scored the run that put the Tigers up 6-4.
McCann earned the win in this one, as Mizzou finished out the game keeping Auburn scoreless the rest of the way. McCann is now 6-7 this season, after pitching 3.2 scoreless innings to finish the sweep.
