COLUMBIA, Mo.- Both the Missouri men's and women's swimming and diving teams raised some eyebrows around the Big 12 Conference on Friday in Lawrence, Kan. Both Missouri teams finished in fourth place overall at the Big 12 Relay Meet. The Missouri women scored 71 points finishing just four points out of second place. Texas was the winner with 117 points followed by Kansas with 75 points, Texas A&M with 73 and Missouri with 71. Iowa State placed fifth with 63 points. Only one Big 12 team, Nebraska, did not compete at the event.
The Tiger men also were impressive, finishing just 5.5 points out of third place. Texas racked up 117 points to win the meet with Texas A&M finishing second with 105. The Tigers closed the gap on Iowa State, who finished with 67 points. Mizzou ended up with 61.5 points and Kansas finished fifth overall with 46.50 points.
"This was a fun meet," said Head Coach Brian Hoffer. "Both teams did real well. This is the best showing that we have had at this meet. Nothing scared us. We just went out there and competed and really did a nice job."
Neither Missouri team had ever won a race in the four-year history of the Big 12 Relays until Friday. The Mizzou women brought home the first victory in the 300-yard breaststroke relay. Tiffany Bohon, Kara Bramer and Leslie Hoh swam the event in 3:19.80 for the win.
Later in the day, it was the men's turn to bring home their first win. Mike Cervenka, Matt Ferrarelli and Aaron Lo cruised in the 800-yard medley relay with a time of 7:55.88, winning the race by over four seconds. Ferrarelli, who's second leg was 400-yards, finished his split in an amazing 4:02.00.
"Matt's 400 was incredible," said Hoffer. "For him to go a 4:02.00 at this time of year is really impressive. He was cruising."
Missouri will be in action this Saturday at the MU Natatorium when the Tigers host archrival Kansas. The Missouri women will be looking for their first dual win in school history against the Jayhawks while the men look to make it three straight victories against KU.
