Norman, Okla.--The University of Missouri gymnastics team competed in the 5th Annual Big 12 Championships on Saturday finishing fourth with a score of 193.675. That score is the third highest score of the season for Mizzou and the 13th highest score in school history. The No. 4 Nebraska Cornhuskers took the team title with a score of 197.650 effort, edging out No. 9 Iowa State (197.050) while Oklahoma finished third with a score of 197.600.
Head Coach Rob Drass said it was a good experience for his young team at the Championships and he was happy with the way they competed.
"We competed well tonight and gave a great effort," Drass said. "All four of these teams are quality squads and I am very proud of our girls. We also made some good strides toward getting some of our athletes into regionals and we look forward to that competition."
Mizzou had a tough assignment starting out on what has been their lowest scoring event of the season, the balance beam. The Tigers recorded three falls on the beam and despite a career-high tying effort of 9.800 by Alina Hamm, Mizzou found themselves in fourth place out of the gate with a team score of 47.750.
The Tigers were able to fight back putting up a 48.825 on floor, which was highlighted by another good performance by Hamm with her 9.825 effort to the sounds of the Beastie Boys. Hamm once again scored better than 39.075, the fifth time this season.
Mizzou finished the night on bars, the teams most consistent event, and did not disappoint the Mizzou contingent present at the Loyd Noble Center. The Tigers put up a team score of 48.950 on bars, the second best bars score Mizzou has put up this season Competing in her final meet of her career, senior Ann Gietler registered a 9.850 effort and was presented with a plaque following the meet for her outstanding contributions to Big 12 gymnastics throughout her career.
The Tigers end the regular and Big 12 season at 4-14 overall and 0-8 in the Big 12. As a team, the Tigers season is over, but several individuals have a good chance to qualify to regionals.
