COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Missouri gymnastics team kicked off the 2006 season with a promising start at the annual Black & Gold Scrimmage at the Hearnes Center on Saturday night. The Black team bested the Gold team 189.000 to 187.500 as Tiger veterans and newcomers alike recorded impressive routines during the meet.
In her first collegiate meet, freshman Adrianne Perry led the way with a 38.150 in the all-around after posting career-highs on beam and floor with a 9.800 and a meet-high 9.750, respectively. Senior Lauren Schwartzman recorded the highest score of the night with a 9.900 on beam, senior Jodie Heinicka won the vault after scoring a 9.800 and both senior Sarah Zigler and freshman Alicia Hatcher recorded a 9.800 on bars.
"I think I saw a lot of great things today," said Missouri head coach Rob Drass. "This meet for us is a wakeup call and we're just trying to get the cobwebs out. Our top six or seven kids on each event really did a fine job. At this point in time, as a coach, you always want more. You always look for more, so there were definitely things we saw that we need to work on."
Junior Amanda Pezzullo notched a 9.700 on vault to finish in second and sophomore Lisa Puccio was tied for third with Heinicka on bars after tying a career-high with a 9.700. Heinicka scored a 9.700 on beam and on floor for second and on floor, sophomore Katie Kluga and Schwartzman also recorded a 9.700 to tie for second.
"As a team, we showed some strong points," said Schwartzman. "This meet is basically to get out in front of a crowd and see how you react. I think we did really well and I think we'll take what we did tonight back into the gym and get ready for the Super Six."
The Tigers officially open the 2006 season at the Super Six Challenge on Jan. 6 at 7:00 p.m. CT in Baton Rouge, La. Missouri will face off against No. 4 Alabama, host and No. 7 LSU, No. 8 Nebraska, No. 11 Oklahoma and No. 15 Auburn in the meet, which will be aired on tape delay on ESPN2 on Jan. 15 at 1:30 p.m. CT.
